February Character Trait
Our February Character Trait is Dignity. We will focus on this character trait in a variety of different ways throughout February. We will use this trait for our Student of the Month recommendations, Hornet Cards, and weekly Student Announcements. Dignity is acting in a way that will be valued and respected. Actions include finding value in others regardless of their differences and individuality; problem-solving constructively; using facts wisely and being gracious.
East PTO Updates
We have had numerous complaints, accidents, and near misses after school during pick-up! Here are 3 ways YOU can help!
1. DO NOT BLOCK THE ENTRY - this forces parents to use the only exit available to enter the lot. If the front lot is full continue into the side lot keeping the entry clear.
2. PLEASE PULL INTO THE SIDE LOT FOR PICK-UP- this will help with the flow of traffic and clear the blockage on Warm Springs Ave where accidents happen. Do not allow your student to access your vehicle while you are on the road waiting. Pull into the East lot or wait at the Ranch Market.
3. CLOSE THE GAP - if you are picking up in front of the school and NOT blocking the entry please pull up as far as possible to the car in front of you so we can accommodate more vehicles.
Thank you for helping to do your part! We are looking for parking lot volunteers and have contacted BPD to further assistance.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED- Support the staff and help keep students safer! Flexible and short time slots that could help make a big impact on student experience! Sign Up Here!

East Bathrooms
Several TikTok challenges over the past couple of months have encouraged students to vandalize school bathrooms. Schools across the country and across our Boise School District have been affected. The vandalism includes graffiti on the walls, toilets clogged with food items and a variety of other things, cracked toilets, and other types of messes. East has not been exempt from this type of vandalism. We have many bathrooms here at East and each bathroom is less than 200 feet apart. One of our strategies to minimize bathroom vandalism is to close a couple of bathrooms down to help slow down the randomness of the bathroom vandalism. We assure you that if one bathroom is temporarily closed, another is only about 150 feet away. We will continue discussing our character traits with everyone as we hope these TikTok challenges slow down. Thank you for your support and your continued discussions with your students.
Hornet Huddle
Last month we shared information about our daily Hornet Huddle time. If you remember, every day right before 3rd period, we have a 19 minute Hornet Huddle time. During our Hornet Huddle time, we focus on academic preparedness, reading, and building/growing positive relationships between staff and students. Over the next few Hornet Nations Newsletters, we will be going over our daily goals for our Hornet Huddle time (each day has a different focus).
This month we are excited to share about “Management Monday”. Our learning goal during Management Monday is to teach students to use Google Calendar as a tool to keep track of classroom assignments, due dates, upcoming tests and to set SMART goals. Students set a weekly personal goal each Monday during Hornet Huddle time and reflect on their goals from the previous week. During Management Monday time, students also look through their Google Classrooms to see if they have any missing assignments, upcoming tests and create a study/homework plan for the week. Other activities we do during Management Monday can include managing email/junk email, blocking Google Classroom notifications so it is not so overwhelming, searching email for specific senders, and flagging, sorting or creating labels (folders) for their email. Go Hornets!
Emergency Drills
All schools are required to do a monthly evacuation drill (fire drill) but in addition to this emergency drill, we are expected to do other emergency drills in September and January/February. Our Lockdown Drill will be the week of February 7. When we have our Lockdown drill, we will do this in partnership with Boise City Police.

Tutoring at Timberline High School
Timberline High School is starting an afterschool tutoring program, offering academic help to both our students as well as East and Les Bois Junior High students.
Our team of capable high school students is volunteering their time and their expertise in order to help other students. They are supervised by a certified teacher and this is a great opportunity for your student to get help in a specific content area or spend additional time reviewing school materials. This time can also be used to help accelerate your student's academic progress.
Students will work in our library, and days and times include:
Monday 3:15 - 4:30
Wednesday 3:15 - 4:30
Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Parents are welcome to transport junior high students to Timberline themselves if they are able, or they can fill out the Alternate Site Application to ride a bus from their junior high that drops off at a stop near Timberline High School on Mondays and Wednesdays. Parents/guardians are responsible for finding transportation home from Timberline after tutoring. And of course, high school students are welcome to transport themselves.
If you would like to sign your child up for the THS Tutoring program, please complete THIS FORM. Students are also welcome to drop in without signing up on the form.
College Awareness Days
To support our schoolwide AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) goals and to continually support college awareness for our students, we will begin having College Awareness Days every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. On these days, staff and students are encouraged to dress in college wear from a favorite college. Our February College Awareness day is Wednesday the 23rd since we will be having our Spirit Week February 7-11.

Reminder - Expectations If Your Student is Quarantining at Home
The Boise School District follows CDC school protocols when a student is exposed, tests positive, or has symptoms of COVID-19. The Exposure and Illness Decision Trees along with more COVID-19 information is available on our Boise School District Website.
If your student is quarantining at home, they are marked as “virtual learning”. Virtual learning means that students will be accessing each teacher’s Google Classroom to see what assignments they need to work on while at home if they are feeling well enough. Teachers will not be teaching via a Google Meet online while we are full-time in-person. If there is an assignment the student does not understand, they are encouraged to email their teacher for clarification. If the teacher can not explain things via email, they may set up a Google Meet to help the student with the assignment. If at any time you or your student is not understanding something, please reach out to their teacher.
