Board Meeting Details

This regular Board of Education meeting was held in person at the District Office.

1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

2. Approval of Meeting Agenda

The agenda was approved.

3. What's Good in 109

Mr. Steckling presented the monthly What's Good in 109 report, highlighting:


CHALLENGE

-Shepard and Caruso 6th and 7th graders spent a day over the last few weeks being challenged at Camp Duncan


COLLABORATE

-Wilmot's PTO threw an awesome movie night on the back lawn of the school

-Walden students demonstrated kindness and collaboration teaching each other how to tie shoes


CREATE

-Caruso creates school spirit every week with their festive Blue Jay of the Week presentations

-South Park 1st graders created life outside their school, participating in a bulb planting project thanks to the help of parents/guardians


Kipling is our featured school of the month, as we showcase the 3 C's in one building:


CHALLENGE: 3rd graders worked to understand the effects/impacts earthquakes have


COLLABORATE: Kipling has started up their robust buddy program again, pairing older and younger students with collaboration opportunities throughout the year

CREATE: Kipling's courtyard garden, the Meg, has created another robust crop of produce that is being donated and distributed to local food banks and emergency responders. Kipling students get to help in the process!


Finally, we had three kindergarten presenters from Kipling: Chloe, Lyla, and Joey demonstrate "sticky learning" with a fun activity featuring board member Mrs. Jakymiw!

4. Superintendent's Report

Mr. Simeck showed some sights from around the district. He attended the Gratitude rock painting at Walden and got to see some really creative designs! He was also in attendance for Caruso's pep assembly.


Mr. Simeck says that we are discontinuing SHIELD testing due to lack of interest. Families were notified in the most recent 109 News.


He expressed his condolences surrounding the recent tragic event in our community involving a 109 student.


Mr. Simeck thanked the buildings & grounds department for their work in ensuring our HVAC systems are working well. He commended Dr. Filippi and his team for hiring a district painter, whose work has already made a difference in many of our buildings. He congratulated Dr. Filippi and Kelly Mitchell for earning a Meritorious Budget Award from ASBO.


He gave special recognition to our principals and assistant principals, who will be honored during Principal Appreciation Week (and Month) in October.


Mr. Simeck said that the master facility planning process has begun. Various board members toured all six buildings in the last month. This will be an ongoing evaluation and process. There have already been a few areas to address of note. Mr. Simeck cautioned that some of our HVAC systems are nearing the end of their lifespan. We are not going to be able to overcome constraint issues at Walden. There are some elevation challenges at Wilmot. In the coming months we will be talking about the master facility planning process and forecasting what we need to do from a financial standpoint.

5. Community Participation Relative to Matters on the Meeting Agenda (Policy 2:230)

There were no speakers present.

6. Public Hearing: eLearning Day Plan Renewal

The hearing started at 7:25 p.m.

President Montgomery was required to ask for public comment three times.

There was no public comment.

The hearing closed at 7:26 p.m.

7.1. Freedom of Information Requests (Policy 2:250)

There were no requests made.

7.2. Annual Enrollment Update (Policy 4:150)

Dr. Filippi presented a report to the board. Through the end of August, DPS 109 had 2,730 students enrolled.

7.3. Employee Compensation Report (Public Act 96-0434)

Dr. Filippi presented the report. There were no questions from the board.

7.4. Updated Draft of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Mr. Simeck presented the draft to the board for their consideration. There was a short period of discussion. After some revision, a final draft will be brought to the board for the October meeting. You can click below to see the draft in BoardBook.

7.5. District Succession of Authority Plan (Policy 3:70)

Dr. Filippi presented this plan, which is done annually per board policy.

8.2. Recommendation to Approve a Resolution for eLearning Days

The resolution was approved.

8.3. Recommendation to Approve the Annual Enrollment Update (Policy 4:150)

The update was approved.

8.4. Recommendation to Approve the Employee Compensation Report (Public Act 96-0434)

The report was approved.

8.5. Recommendation to Approve Core Values for District 109

The values were approved.

8.6. Approval of Meeting Minutes from August 25, 2022 (Policy 2:220)

The minutes were approved.

8.7. Approval of Closed Session Meeting Minutes from August 25, 2022 (Policy 2:220)

The minutes were approved.

8.8. Recommendation to Approve the District Succession of Authority Plan (Policy 3:70)

The plan was approved.

8.9. Resolution Honoring National Principal Appreciation Week October 16-22, 2022

The resolution was approved.

9. Committee Reports (Policy 2:150)

Mrs. Jakymiw attended recent TrueNorth events and reported back.

Mr. Ashman said that the policy committee is going to be scheduling a meeting in the coming weeks.

Mr. Kuo reported that the Finance committee met this evening and looked at 5-year projections and discussed the tax levy.

10. Open Community Participation (Policy 2:230)

There was no participation.

11. Board/Superintendent Other

Mr. Simeck thanked our principals for all of their hard work. He thanked the board members for extra hours they have been putting in with school visits and other meetings. Members of the Board will be at the Deerfield Farmers Market on October 8th.


President Montgomery thanked Tim Ryan and the B&G staff for the recent building tours. She thanked the district's new painter for all of his work. She gave kudos to Dr. Filippi for having foresight to get ahead of potential supply issues with AC parts. She congratulated Dr. Filippi on his meritorious budget award.
