Welcome back from Fall Break! We hope you were able to rest and enjoy time with your family. We are now beginning quarter 2 and would like to give our new families a warm welcome. If you have any questions, please reach out. We are here to help! Please read below for events and announcements.

Blended Learnings

High School Blended Learning continues on Wednesday, October 24th from 9am to 12pm. We are located at 312 Cantril Street, Castle Rock 80104. Please enter on the east side of the building through door K. Just a reminder to check your camp expectations (Full time students) to determine whether blended is required for you.

Bus Sign Up for Blended

If you will need transportation to/from blended, you will need to sign up weekly. The link to sign up will be in the Friday email HERE. We have limited seating so sign ups are first come, first serve. Sign ups will close when the bus is full. If you do not get a seat, please call the office to be placed on a waitlist for the week. Remember: you must sign up weekly for pick ups.

Changes to Blended Wednesday

Due to student and parent feedback, we will be changing the time for high school blended on Wednesdays starting in the 2nd Quarter. High school blended will remain from 9:00am-2:00pm on the last Wednesday we meet of every month. All other Wednesdays, blended will run from 9:00am - 12:00pm. The bus will continue to run immediately following the blended session, whether it be a 12:00 end time or a 2:00 end time. This change will take place with the first session of the 2nd quarter on 10/17/18. Every blended session will continue to have a 2-hour help session and a 1 hour activity. On the extended Wednesday, other activities are planned for the afternoon. Below are the blended dates and times for 2nd quarter for your reference.

What Happened Last Week at Blended

This past Wednesday, students had help session time with their teachers, learned about each other through an activity, and new students had orientation. It was such a busy day, we all forgot to take pictures!

Computer Check Out

If your student needs a computer, you may check out a device from eDCSD. We encourage your student to use their own device, if possible. If you have questions regarding technology or device specifications, please contact jennifer.payne@dcsdk12.org. We will be available to check out student computers beginning on Aug 8th and checkout will be available from 8am to noon, daily. Please note that a $100 deposit is required for check out and will be collected before checkout. The deposit will be refunded when you return the device.


Blended Community Service Opportunity:

Students will have the opportunity to participate in community service at Rosie’s Ranch Therapeutic Horse Riding Center on November 7th. Details about the event and sign up can be found HERE.


Diversity League:

On Friday, November 2nd, The Continental Diversity League will hold a conference at Arapahoe Community College from 8 AM to 1:30 PM. Please see the website linked HERE and the flyer HERE.


CU Anschutz Bioengineering Open House

The Department of Bioengineering is hosting an open house at our location on the Anschutz Medical Campus for prospective students, families, and interested teachers/advisors to learn more about our program on Friday, November 2nd, 2018. Our department is the first and only one of its kind in Colorado and provides students with a unique opportunity to combine their interest in engineering with the medical profession. Looking for Writers for a School Publication: Do you enjoy writing? Are you looking for an opportunity to get involved at eDCSD? We are looking for students who love writing and are interested in working on a monthly or quarterly newsletter. Our newsletter will highlight our students and the activities they are involved in, events taking place at eDCSD, and our students' creative writing. You do not have to be a full time student to participate, but you should be available to meet at least once a month--in person or virtually. If you are interested in getting involved, email Mrs. McNary at kmcnary@dcsdk12.org by October 26th.

Virtual Parent Orientation:

On Thursday, October 25th from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm, we will be holding a virtual parent orientation. We will cover technology tools that parents can use to support their student, tips for online student success, and have an open question session. Math Club

eDCSD now has a math club! Mu Alpha Theta is a national math honors society for high school students. Our chapter offers something for everyone, from challenge problems to tutoring to competitions. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to improve their math skills. To be eligible, Mu Alpha Theta requires you to maintain a math grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 and complete at least two years of college preparatory mathematics, including algebra and geometry, with enrollment in a third. If you are interested, please contact Luke Miga (migald@s.dcsdk12.org) or Mrs. Sanders (kerry.sanders@dcsdk12.org).

Fall Break begins today through Sunday, October 14th. We hope that you have a relaxing week and take time to recharge. We return to school on October 15th when second quarter begins. Please read below for events and announcements.

Fall Break

There is no school Friday, October 5 through Sunday, October 14th for fall break. Students will not have access to courses over the break and teacher are not available. Quarter 2 begins on Monday, October 15th. The eDCSD office will be closed for Fall Break. We will reopen with regular hours on October 15th.

Support Opportunities this Week

Due to fall break, there will be no virtual classes, help sessions or blended learning this coming week. All activities will resume when we return from break on October 15th.


What Happened Last Week at Blended

On Wednesday, students had help session time with their teachers to finish finals and learned different ways to deal with stress. They burned off some stress and made a mess by making stress balls out of balloons and flour, they learned about stress fighting foods and made yogurt parfaits, and tried some meditation (or maybe they were taking a power nap?)

Weekly Update 9/28/18

Dear eDCSD High School Families,




The quarter is almost over and fall break is just around the corner. This Sunday, September 30th by midnight is the last day for students to turn in regular coursework. Finals week is October 1-4. All finals are due by midnight on October 4th. Fall break begins on October 5th. Please read below for events and announcements for the coming week.

End of Quarter Notice

eDCSD is on a quarterly grading period system. The end of the grading period is Thursday, October 4th, for the first quarter. All regular work is due by this SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 AT MIDNIGHT. Monday, October 1 through Thursday, October 4 is final exams and students will only be permitted to turn in final exams. All finals are due Thursday, October 4th at midnight. There is no school on Friday, October 5th for a teacher grading day.

This next week at blended, students will have help sessions with teachers and will have the option to go on a field trip to X-treme Challenge. See the sign up below.

Upcoming Field Trip

On Wednesday, September 26th, high school students will have a field trip to X-treme Challenge Sports Center. Students have the option to ride the bus or provide their own transportation. As space on the bus is limited, students will be able to ride the bus based on order of sign up. Click HERE to sign your child up for the field trip.

Gifted and Talented Information:

Tuesday night, September 25th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm we will be having a GT 101 parent night at Highlands Ranch High School. We will start out with a GT 101 presentation and will then offer breakout sessions to attend including an overview of the Discovery program, identification, ALPs, etc. See the flyer below for more information.

Enrollment Paperwork:

eDCSD does not have express check in. Instead, an enrollment packet is mailed during summer or emailed after school begins. If you received an email from Julie Naab last week, we are still missing your enrollment packet. It is essential that receive this packet in order to fulfill state requirements. Please return this packet by Wednesday, September 26th.

Progress Grades

Progress grades were posted in Infinite Campus Parent Portal on Wednesday. While live grades are found in Canvas and will provide an up to date view of student grades and activity, the grade in Infinite Campus is a snapshot of your student’s grade the beginning of this week.

Upcoming Field Trip

On Wednesday, September 26th, high school students will have a field trip to X-treme Challenge Sports Center. Students have the option to ride the bus or provide their own transportation. Math Club

eDCSD now has a math club! Mu Alpha Theta is a national math honors society for high school students. Our chapter offers something for everyone, from challenge problems to tutoring to competitions. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to improve their math skills. To be eligible, Mu Alpha Theta requires you to maintain a math grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 and complete at least two years of college preparatory mathematics, including algebra and geometry, with enrollment in a third. Registrations are now being accepted for the 2018 Youth Congress-- held at the State Capitol

September 24 from 9 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

State Capitol, 200 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203

What is Youth Congress?

It’s an event where adult leaders work with you on issues that affect the lives of Douglas County youth

Requirements and considerations for participation:

· Must be in the 9th-12th grade living in Douglas County

· Parent/guardian permission required to attend

· Credit for Community Service Hours will be received – 7.5 hours

· Excused DCSD activity

· Name, age, school, contact phone, and email for participant and parent/guardian

required

· Participants may choose their topics of interest from a provided list

· Lunch will be provided

If needed, busses available at:

Highlands Ranch High School

or

Legend High School

7:45 am – you must be at the flagpole by the school to secure a seat

Youth Education and Safety in our Schools is offering a free Parent Academy on Change the Digital Culture in our Homes. Please see the flyer below and RSVP for the event on October 16 from 6-8:30 pm in Lone Tree.

Computer Check Out

If your student needs a computer, you may check out a device from eDCSD. We encourage your student to use their own device, if possible. If you have questions regarding technology or device specifications, please contact jennifer.payne@dcsdk12.org. We will be available to check out student computers beginning on Aug 8th and checkout will be available from 8am to noon, daily. Please note that a $100 deposit is required for check out and will be collected before checkout. The deposit will be refunded when you return the device.

The eDCSD office is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am- 3:30 pm. Please keep in mind that many of our staff (teachers, counselors, and learning coach) work from home most days so if you need assistance, you can always call the office at 303-387-9465 or send us an email.

High School Blended Learning continues on Wednesday, September 12th from 9am to 2pm. We are located at 312 Cantril Street, Castle Rock 80104. Please enter on the east side of the building through door K. Just a reminder to check your camp expectations (Full time students) to determine whether blended is required for you.

What Happened Last Week at Blended

On Wednesday, students had help session time with their teachers and attended a substance abuse course.

What is Coming Up at Blended

This next week at blended, students will attend the second half of the substance abuse course and will have help sessions with their teachers.

Bus Sign Up for Blended

If you will need transportation to/from blended, you will need to sign up weekly. The link to sign up will be in the Friday email HERE. We have limited seating so sign ups are first come, first serve. Sign ups will close when the bus is full. If you do not get a seat, please call the office to be placed on a waitlist for the week. Parent Canvas Accounts

Parent Canvas accounts are now active. Please use THIS link to access the Canvas Parent Login Page. Login information was sent to you in an email last Friday. If you cannot find that email, please email jjpayne@dcsdk12.org. Refer to THIS help guide in order set up your account and personalize your settings.

Progress Grades

While live grades and activity are best viewed in Canvas through your Parent Canvas Account, you may view a snapshot progress grade in Infinite Campus starting on Wednesday, September 12th. This grade is simply a snapshot of your child’s grade at the halfway point of the quarter. This grade is not permanent and is not recorded to any transcript.

Upcoming Field Trip

On Wednesday, September 26th, high school students will have a field trip to X-treme Challenge Sports Center. Students have the option to ride the bus or provide their own transportation. Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC) Is Looking for New Members (All Students)

Students, are you looking for a leadership opportunity? Want to make positive changes in our school? Looking for a way to get involved? Then consider joining the Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC). PAC is looking for 3-5 students to join our group. Meetings will be held once a month on Wednesdays to discuss school needs, give the Principal feedback on school issues and plan events like the holiday party. As an added bonus, you will get to know other students and snacks will be served. If you are interested, please email gwiley1@dcsdk12.org for more info or to sign up. Make a difference in your school and get involved! THE FIRST MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, Sept. 5 FROM 1-2 PM. If you cannot meet in person but want to join virtually, please let me know.
