Salem Spotlight
September 2019
Our Mission
At Salem, we realize all children are individuals, and this may be their first experience in social living. Our desired goal in working with all children is growth.
We strive to create a stimulating environment for each child that will promote and foster his/her interests and curiosity, thus promoting optimal learning. This learning will incorporate the development of academic, relationship, and citizenship skills, a requirement for functioning in our society as productive citizens.
Principal's Message
Dear Salem Parents and Community,
As principal of Salem Elementary, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for another great year with the Little Miami Local Schools. We are all excited to have students back in our classrooms and hallways filling them with energy and enthusiasm for learning. It is our mission to help every child feel welcomed, connected, and part of the Little Miami Family. We have GREAT teachers who spend hours planning and creating lessons to engage our students in learning. Our staff utilize research-based best practices to determine current skill levels and set goals for growth and improvement.
I am honored to serve as principal of Salem Elementary. It is truly a privilege to be part of a community where parents, teachers and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships to support social and academic growth.
Once again, welcome back! Let's make it a GREAT year together.
From the Desk of the Preschool Director
by Mrs. Losey
Welcome back to our returning preschool families, and welcome to all our new preschool families. Thank you to everyone who came to our Curriculum Night and listened to all the wonderful things your students will learn throughout the year. Our team is very proud of what we do, and I hope you feel the same.
During fall conferences, you will work with your child's teacher to create individual learning goals for your student. Be thinking of things you would like to see over the course of the school year, and we can help tailor it to fit your child's developmental level.
I can't wait to see our smallest panthers grow this year!

Helpful Handbook Reminders

School Lunch
School lunch fees may be paid on-line or by sending money with your child. Students are allowed to charge two meals. We suggest marking your calendar when your child’s prepaid meals end or taping an extra day’s lunch money inside your child’s book bag to cover a day when lunch money is accidentally forgotten. Free and reduced meal forms are available on-line or in the office for eligible students.
We promote healthy eating and wellness initiatives. Students are expected to eat lunch unless they have a note from parents giving them permission to skip lunch. Milk, water, and juice are available for purchase with lunch. Pop is not available to students during the school day and should not be part of packed lunches. Students are permitted to buy two snack items with their lunch unless the parent indicates otherwise. Students are not allowed to buy snacks instead of lunch.

Lunch concerns should be directed to Rachel Tilford, Food Service Director, at 899-5130.
Cell Phone Policy
In an effort to decrease interruptions to instruction and maintain student confidentiality, students with cell phones (including watches with phones) must keep them in their backpacks during school hours.
Transportation Changes
Any change in pickup procedures requires a written note or email. Changes may not be made by phone. The office must receive changes by 2:00 P.M. Changes will not be made after 2:00 P.M.
Birthdays
Birthdays are very meaningful for young children and may be recognized by parents in a variety of ways at Little Miami. Some families choose to donate a book or learning materials (i.e. puzzle/game) in their child’s name to the
classroom, or a non-food item (stickers/pencil) for each student.
In our efforts to promote wellness and to be conscious of student food allergies, you may not send food or candy.
Please do not have balloons or flowers delivered to the school. These items may not be taken home on the bus.
Social invitations to non-school sanctioned events (birthday parties, pool parties, etc.) may not be distributed at school.

Building Reading Lives!
We are working very hard at Salem Township Elementary to build our students’ reading lives! Students are learning that readers don’t just read books, but that they build lives in which reading goes well. Readers don’t read like cranky pants. They treat reading like it is gold. One way you can encourage your child’s reading life at home is to make sure that he/she has good reading habits. These habits include: having a good spot at home to read, setting goals by thinking about how many pages he/she wants to read, and making reading a priority in your home. Encourage reading everyday whenever your child has time. We teach students to “steal” time to read. We understand that evenings are very busy, so we talk to our students about how to “steal” time to read. They can steal time in the car, on the bus, waiting for dinner to be ready, or before bed. Any of those small moments can add up to the times your child’s teacher may want them to read.
Counselor's Corner
Hello! I am the school counselor for kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grades. My role as your child’s school counselor is to provide support in 3 main areas: academic success, social/emotional development, and career awareness. I work with students individually, in small groups, and I visit all of the classrooms to provide lessons to the entire class. When possible, groups are scheduled during the lunch time of the student so that no classroom instruction is missed. If you are interested in your child meeting with me individually or in a small group, please contact me at rmalblanc@lmsdoh.org.
Please note that Preschool parents should contact Erin Losey and their child's teacher with any concerns about your child. Mrs. Losey's number is 513-899-5275 ext. 45103.

Important Information on West Nile Virus from Warren County Health District-
The Warren County Health District (WCHD) and Ohio Department of Health (ODH) have identified positive West Nile virus samples within our county, as well as statewide, during mosquito trapping season as of August 10, 2018.
As youth sporting events begin it's important that participants and spectators alike take proper precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. These precautions include wearing long sleeves and applying mosquito repellent to reduce the likelihood of a bite.
West Nile virus can potentially cause illness. The WCHD remains proactive in treating standing water in public areas with an environmentally safe larvicide and by trapping mosquitoes and having them tested by the ODH.
For more information, including an interactive map of the county/mosquito activity, and tips for minimizing risk, visit the Warren County Health District website at: www.warrenchd.com
