Principal Lunde's Weekly Update
Jan. 4, 2021
"You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream."
C.S. Lewis
Happy New Year! Welcome back to school! The UELF Staff is excited to connect with our students and families. Please note that the staff is intentionally easing back into the routine by taking time to meet students with familiar content and taking time to connect. As a family, use this time to ease into the routine by incorporating strategies that foster participation and engagement. For example, work with your child to set up the daily schedule and be sure to include student independent work time, which could be silent reading, writing practice, flashcards for number fluency, observation time of nature, and organizing their learning space or learning box. A new strategy that students are doing is putting school, including the digital device, in a backpack; this backpack comes out for school time and it is put away when the student is done with school for the day. Set up boundaries so that school takes up a certain time rather than feeling like it's always lingering. Use tools like a kitchen timer, a checklist, and communicate with the teacher. IF you feel your student needs a pep talk, please use the Check-In With Mrs. Lunde Googleform to set up a time to connect with me.
Other tools to support building a routine is to support your child participating in the extra-curricular activities at UELF. I have a daily activity for connecting with students:
- Monday and Friday at 8am - Jump & Jive
- Tuesday and Thursday 3pm - Kinesthetic Math/Problem of the Month
- Wednesday at 12:30pm - Arts & Reads
The UELF Staff also has lunch bunches, the Crochet Club, Dance Parties, Morning Break, plus the Support Staff has created student-lead groups, which change every month.

Maker Kick-Off Assembly
How does UELF use project based learning to develop the Maker Mindset and target key learning skills like reading, writing, and mathematics?
Join us on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 3pm for the Maker World Kick-Off Assembly. During this assembly, students and families will be introduced to the menu of activities that will be provided to EVERY student at UELF. During this Maker World month, students will:
- Interact with the Exploratorium and the Sonoma County Office of Education STEAM Team
- Participate in hands-on workshops with the UELF staff in live or recorded video sessions
- Meet Scott Weaver and Cain's Arcade
- Share their Project Based Learning experience
- Observe and provide feedback to the UELF projects across the grades
Every time a student participates in a Maker World activity, a student's name will be put into the Maker World Raffle. The raffle includes materials and resources that foster the Maker Mindset and the critical thinking mindset of project-based learning that is the core value of UELF.
