Principal's Update on Enrollment

It was great to connect with so many CSS families during Back To School Night. I am enjoying getting to know you and your students, and am looking forward to the year ahead.

I have been getting many questions and concerns about the future location of Creative Science and potential changes on the horizon. At times, the district examines school boundaries to address enrollment concerns. This process is taking place in southeast Portland as there are schools overenrolled and many with low enrollment. The district has tasked a team called the Southeast Guiding Coalition (SEGC) to determine a course of action. I am a member of the team as well as one of our CSS parents.

No decisions have been made about future locations of CSS, and all plans will ensure CSS continues as an option for PPS families. The decisions will be made via community input. Members of the SEGC have set up a listening session for BIPOC families in the CSS community next week on September 30th. I encourage families to attend this session and share their input, as community input will be a large driver of the decisions moving forward.

You may also share any input you have with me, so I can ensure I am advocating and representing the needs of our community in these sessions. As more information comes out, I will continue to share updates on the process.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Volunteers

We are beginning to put out requests for volunteers to the CSS community. We will only utilize essential volunteers at this time to carry out school functions. All volunteers are background checked, required to show proof of vaccination, and must comply with all safety protocols while in the school. You will need to be currently approved through PPS. Sign up to be an approved volunteer here. Approval only lasts three years so if it has been a while please re-submit. The CSS Office will put volunteer sign-ups out via Konstella and our school newsletter. Click here to sign up for Konstella.

PPS Student Vaccine Survey

On September 16, families received a brief survey (5-10 minutes) about your students and the COVID-19 vaccination.

In short, we'd like to determine how many of our students (ages 12 and older) are fully vaccinated against the virus and as we anxiously await approval for the COVID-19 vaccine for younger students (age 5 to 11), we'd like to plan for targeted outreach for families to quickly access the vaccine. The information you share will help them prioritize vaccine access and outreach to schools this fall.

Included in this brief survey is a question about your student’s home access to a computer and the internet. As we become a district that further integrates the use of technology in our teaching and learning, this information will better prepares us to equip students and families with these tools.

Please take a moment to complete your unique survey for by September 30, 2021.

Thank you for your support in taking this survey.
