GHE Fourth Grade Weekly Newsletter
Week Eight-October 20, 2023
Weekly Recap
In math, students completed the unit on area and perimeter and multiplicative/additive comparisons. (NC.4.MD.3, NC.4.OA.4). The next topic in math is place value. Students will work to use place value language such as numerals, number names, and expanded form, to read and write multi-digit numbers up to 100,000. (NC.4.NBT.1, NC.4.NBT.2) Please check the parent resource section of the newsletter for how to best help your child at home.
In ELA, students worked to describe the life of a poet and explain what inspired the poet to write poetry. Students became part of an expert group to read a biography and document their findings on their graphic organizer. Prior to working with an expert group, teachers modeled how to gather and record notes by learning more about the poet William Carlos Williams. Students learned more about his life by reading the biography, The River of Words. (RL.4.1, RL.4.3, W.4.2)
In Social Studies, students continued the unit, We All Are NC. During this unit, students will be able to explain how traditions, social structures, and artistic expression have contributed to the unique identity of North Carolina (4.B.1.1), explain how the values and beliefs of various indigenous, religious, and racial groups have contributed to the development of North Carolina (4.B.1.2), and explain the significance of historical symbols in North Carolina from various perspectives (4.H.1.6).
