Argyle High School Library
December 2016
New Reference Ebooks
A bunch of new ebooks have been added to our GVRL (Gale Virtual Reference Library) site. Many of them are reference books that will be an asset to your students. See directions below to get to them. Start by accessing the library website.
Free Flipster Trial = Free Magazines!!
Browser view
After accessing flipster from the browser on your phone, find your magazine and "Open in App"
Download View
Downloaded into the app and BOOM! You're set to start reading!
Flipster is an app and website where we can easily access digital magazines. Give it a try yourself and see how you like it. This would be something great for kids to log into and use when there are a few "extra" minutes left in class too.

Flipster is also an app in both iTunes and Android store. You need to load the magazines using the browser of your device into Flipster and then you can access from the app. Easy peasy!
P.S. During the 30-day trial period, we have over 1,000 magazines to enjoy! Here are just a few you might like...
The latest ESPN?
I love School Library Journal...of course
Need a recipe for the holidays?
If you are interested in finding some quality professional development, but you don't want to have to take a day off work, drive somewhere, and mess with all that, this could be just what you need! Check out their calendar of upcoming webinars to see if there is something for you. You can also watch previously recorded webinars...I love this feature.
If you ever ask students to build timelines, this is a great tool to have them try. Easily add images, captions, links, even audio. Maybe you don't want students to write a full-length research paper? This tool could be an alternative. Here's a How To video to help. And an example below.
Check out the Family Budget Calculator created by the Economic Policy Insitute. A great way for students to investigate the economic situations of different families by zipcode.
Hour of Code
Don't forget! Hour of Code happens this month! I'll be holding events in the library during Mega Lunch the week of December 5-11, but if you want to bring some incredible computer science activities into your room, PLEASE let me know!
More information about Hour of Code can be found below...
Check out a study conducted by Stanford on middle and high school students' ability to discern fake news from real news. The results are astounding to say the least. I would love to help students learn the skills that can help them becoming discerning citizens!
