Rigorous Readers by Telethea Bozeman, Reading Specialist
Tips to Promote Daily Reading
· Let students choose their own books. A genuine read comes from genuine enthusiasm for a book. Although you can certainly guide your children in making their selections, be sure that their choices are, ultimately, their own. Children are more likely to finish a book if it’s one of their choices. They are more motivated to read a book daily that peaks their interest.
· Ask prompting questions. Show that you have an interest in what your child is reading. Ask questions like:
1. “What are some similar books to this one you have read?”
2. “What drew you to pick up and read this book?”
3. “What is this book about?”
4. “What do you like about the main character?”
5. “Do any of the characters remind you of yourself or anyone in the family?”
6. “What is the problem in the story and if it were you, how would you solve it?”
