What is New and Notable at Mount Vernon High School
Principal's Paws
As we start a new month, I would like to share with you exciting opportunities that are available for your students. The first opportunity is for our junior students on October 10, 2018. On that day, all juniors will be taking the PSAT exam. The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is a test designed to help students practice for the SAT. It is also used to determine eligibility for scholarships awarded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This practice exam is designed to help students prepare for the format of college entrance examinations, like the SAT and ACT. It is our hope that this will help students realize their capabilities and strengths as they plan for life beyond Mount Vernon High School. Additionally, some academically advanced sophomore students have elected to sit for the PSAT examination as well. While they will not be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Competition as sophomores, it will give them the opportunity to become familiar with the exam for the coming school year. These students will need to pay the nominal fee for participation in the exam.
In addition to the PSAT, all sophomore and senior students will have the opportunity to participate in the Washington Healthy Youth Survey. The survey asks questions about risks for injury, health outcomes, and alcohol and drug use. Schools, and state and local agencies use survey results to support our youth and reduce their risks. The Healthy Youth Survey is voluntary and anonymous and provides important information to guide policy and programs that serve our youth. Students will take this survey during their advisory class on October 11.
Further information on the PSAT can be found at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10. You may find further information on the Washington Healthy Youth Survey at https://www.askhys.net/. We encourage you to further explore these websites and discuss this information with your student.

Notes from the School Nurse
Happy Fall! As we roll into the cooler fall season, it is time to be proactive to prevent illness. The following are some great suggestions worth your consideration, to help your students stay healthy and in school:
Flu Season is here! Consider talking to your child's doctor about this year's flu vaccine. The Mount Vernon Community Flu Clinic will be held at Cascade Commons on October 17th from 3:00-7:00 pm! Please take advantage of this convenient opportunity. Nurses visiting from Seattle will be providing this service, and will be able to bill most insurance companies.
If you have not yet provided documentation of your immunizations, please provide that to the school office immediately! Forms are available for those who request an exemption. Do not delay! This documentation is mandatory to attend public school.
Asthma- for some students, fall/winter seasonal weather triggers asthma symptoms. If you student has an inhaler prescribed, consider bringing one in for the school day. Please contact the office for an authorization form that you will complete in coordination with the doctor. Then, return the form with the inhaler for your student's coverage at school.
Sleep/rest, good nutrition, and handwashing are the best measures to prevent illness! Please support your child in getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night. This alone will go a long way to prevent illness and maximize their ability for success at school!
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's health!
Sincerely,
Christy Rittenhouse, MSN, RN

Sinceramente,
Christy Rittenhouse, MSN, RN
