BRIXNER MESA TEAM WINS STATE COMPETITION
Seven months ago, Onyx Leah Bartlett and Stephanie Castaneda had never written computer code and didn’t know what a high tunnel was. Today, they have designed an award-winning miniature prototype that enables one person to move the heavy-hooped tunnels used to extend a farmer’s growing season.
The two Brixner Junior High School eighth-graders took first place last month in the Oregon MESA junior high engineering and design competition, beating teams from Portland-area schools. They will represent the state of Oregon in MESA’s National Engineering and Design Competition in late June. MESA stands for Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement. Read more

BONANZA TAKES TIME TO GIVE BACK
In one classroom, students wiped down tables and mopped floors to a shine. In another, a group replaced ceiling tiles. Outside, groups of students weeded flower beds and cleaned up grassy areas. More than 200 Bonanza Junior/Senior High School students spent a morning last month brightening their campus during the school’s annual Give Back Day. The event is a way for students and staff to take action to make their school and community a better place to live. In the past, students have cleaned up the community park and planted trees. FUTURE DECISIONS: 'BE YOUR DREAM'
WE LOVE OUR SCHOOL NURSES
In May, we celebrated School Nurses Day by recognizing our five outstanding school nurses who work to improve the health and education of students throughout our district. Our nurses -- Laura Limb, Tricia Hill, Talythah Pena, Carolyn Sheets, and Rochelle Hill -- work with nearly 7,000 students and 1,000 staff in 21 schools and our District Office. As leaders in our communities, they bridge health care and education, providing and advocating for student-centered quality care every day.
