Administrator Spotlight - Arlene Wallace

Mrs. Wallace is determined to ensure that her teachers and students are prepared for the digital transformation! She is setting the example by pretty much eliminating her intercom announcements by using Google Drive to share documents to teachers and students.

Laptops were delivered at Mayo two weeks ago and we have been seeing some amazing things happening at Mayo already!

Awesome Job!

Rhett Hughes' (DHS) students are creating campaign commercials. The students were required to mention four political issues, and it had to be between 30 seconds and a minute.

Charissa Lannan's (MST) students used the iPads to create clay animations in her Animation class. Results were some great projects.

Lynn O'Donnell (MST) has started using the iPads for the students to be able to access classroom materials online and to visit online museums for different types/styles of art.

Have Your Heard of TPT?

TPT (Teachers Pay Teachers) is an open online marketplace where teachers sell their original lesson plans and other course materials to other teachers, and also share for free.

You can find flipcharts, templates for activities, ISN (Interactive Student Notebook) resources, and so much more! They also send out a weekly newsletter with link to free downloads - many of them are really good. Below you'll find the link to this week's newsletters (they have a different one for PreK-5 and 6-12. From here on out the current week's newsletter link will be included your weekly DCSD Tech Tidbits newsletter.

TPT - Vol 320: Grades 6-12

Website of the Week: Quizlet

What is Quizlet exactly? We start with flash cards. Students can make their own, or choose from millions of flash cards sets created by others. But that’s just the beginning – once you’ve got flashcards, you can use several study modes including multiple choice tests and study games. You can add images and listen to audio, and even study on the go with one of dozens of Quizlet-compatible mobile apps.

Recently released....Quizlet Live! This is an in-class, team-based learning game based on any Quizlet study set. Students are randomly paired into teams of 3-4 students to race against other teams. Each team must work together to clear their board, and the first team to do so wins. Really Cool!

App of the week: Pic Collage

PicCollage is one of my favorite apps. It is a free app that allows you to quickly arrange pictures, video, text, and stickers into collages. From the app you can share your collage to Google Drive, Instagram, Facebook, Dropbox, and many other file sharing services.

It is a wonderful way to create vocabulary thinking maps.

The White House and Michelle Obama Release $250M ‘Open eBooks’ App for Title I and Special Education Teachers

-via EdSurge

As part of the Open eBooks initiative—an initiative highlighted by President Obama last July—the app allows users to access thousands of free books on smartphones or tablets. The app is open to any educator, student or administrator at one of the 66,000+ Title I schools or any of the 194 Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools in the United States. Additionally, White House reps report that any of the hundreds of thousands of special education teachers in the country—no matter what type of school they work for—also have access.

To access the app, educators can sign up on the OpeneBooks.net site and receive codes for their students. Using those codes, students can download the free Open eBooks app to mobile devices and access a library of eBooks.

We're a GAFE district!

We've Gone Google!

DCSD is a Google Apps for Education (GAFE) district. All staff and students have Google accounts in the DCSD Google domain to facilitate communication, collaboration and publishing work.

Although Google Drive and other Google tools are accessible, teachers will continue to use MS Outlook for their email.

If you've never accessed it before, your Google login is firstname.lastname@darlington.k12.sc.us. Your temporary password is Password1 and then you will be prompted to change your password.

If you're having trouble logging into your Google account, please see your school wizard or a member of the DCSD Digital Transformation Academy.
