Field Trip - Blue Springs School of Economics

Fall Parties
Note From Mrs. Seevers
I wanted to inform you all that I am planning to extend my maternity leave by a couple weeks. I plan to be back in the classroom on December 2nd. Cassie Helming will still be my long term sub through Nov. 1. Dr. Means is working on a long term sub for the rest of November. Please feel free to email me if you have any further questions. Thank you!

What's Happening in 5th Grade?
Math
Students have started our unit on multiplying multi-digit whole numbers. We have covered multiplying greater numbers by powers of 10, estimating products, and just started multiplying 3 x 2 digit numbers. Students will be learning different methods to multiply greater numbers.
ELA
In reading we are continuing our figurative language unit. We are seeing how figurative language adds humor and visualization to writing. I look forward to seeing the kids incorporate it more into their pieces in the future. We are also covering theme. This unit is a review unit that I have found the kids are already very strong in. We will continue to practice this and learn to recognize themes in their own writing.
For writing, we are beginning our next writing unit on 3rd person narratives. We will work on incorporating dialogue into our stories and developing our characters in a way that makes them interesting.
Science and Social Studies
Science
We have been busy learning about the smallest pieces of matter during the past week. We have learned that particles are the smallest pieces of matter and that the arrangement of particles in matter can be different based on the state of matter. We further explored the idea that some parts of matter are much smaller than our eyes can see as we discussed the concepts of atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds. We have learned that an atom is the smallest unit of matter and that the theory that all matter is made up of these small particles is called the atomic theory. We finished our unit on Matter by reviewing the characteristics of the three states of matter that help to distinguish one state from another. Our next unit of study will be Changes in States of Matter.
Our test over the Properties of Matter will be coming up on Tuesday, October 29. A study guide to help students prepare for the test was handed out this past Tuesday and should be in the binder part of student trappers. Please let me know if your child needs a copy of the study guide.
Social Studies
We have begun our study of the concepts of Economics this past week in preparation for our field trip to the Blue Springs School of Economics. We have begun our unit with recognizing how goods and services move between producers and consumers in an economy and will focus on the ideas of supply and demand, expenses, revenue, profit, and resources next week as we prepare to run our shops and businesses at the Blue Springs School of Economics. The children recently completed their job applications and will soon be finding our their job roles that they will participate in the day of our trip. We elected our mayor this week as well, and we are really getting excited about our day of learning at Blue Springs School of Economics on Friday, November 1.
We will pick up our studies of the geography, landforms, climate, culture, landmarks and attractions, natural resources, and products of the regions of the United States as we explore the Northeast after our field trip. I had originally scheduled our Northeast quiz for Tuesday, October 29 but have decided to wait to quiz on this unit until after our field trip. I will give out a study guide to help the children study and prepare for the Northeast quiz at a later date. I am sharing some websites again below that I have shared previously that the children can use at home to help them study their states and capitals for the Northeast. I am including the links to these sites below.

During this unit, students will also have the opportunity to participate in our Geography Masters challenge with their states and capitals quizzes. Students who score 90% accuracy or higher on each quiz for each region including the Oceans and Continents quiz are eligible for the Geography Masters Celebration. Students will have 2 attempts at each quiz (original quiz and a retake if needed).
