Steven L. Montemarano

Director of BOCES 4 Science

Welcome to BOCES 4 Science

My name is Steven Montemarano and I am the new Director of BOCES 4 Science. I want to take the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself, my background, why I joined the BOCES 4 team, and share a bit about our program.

As far back as I can remember I have loved science and mathematics. I would spend countless hours reading books on physics and astronomy, watching documentaries on outer space, and (likely my favorite past time) enjoying the wonders of the Star Trek universe. My elementary and secondary teachers had a profound impact on me as they always encouraged me to explore my passions in science and math. This led me to working in the field of STEAM education -- where I taught high school and college level courses for almost 10 years.

I then decided to move into administration and found myself as the Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction for K-12 Science and Math for 4 years. Among the many roles I assumed, my favorite was working with teachers to build engaging curriculum for students to explore science and math concepts. Students were excited to be able to purposefully play with concepts -- and would often share what they did in school with their parents.

This past fall an opportunity came about to join BOCES 4 Science as Director. This position would bring together my passion for STEAM and experience in leadership in a way that impacted students across New York State. As sad as I was to leave my old position, this was an exciting opportunity I couldn't pass up.

I joined the BOCES 4 Science team in October and have loved every minute of it since. I am working with amazing people who care about bringing the best science possible to students across the state.

What is BOCES 4 Science:

BOCES 4 Science is a science program service developed through a collaborative partnership between Monroe 1, Monroe 2-Orleans, Genesee Valley, and Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES. From the beginning, our goal was to retool and modernize science/STEM curriculum and develop shared science resources. We have 21 units of study that form a comprehensive K-5 curriculum spanning the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Earth & Space Sciences through NYSSLS.

We continually work to ensure teachers are supported with outstanding units of study and multiple professional development opportunities around standards and our units. Our mission is to prepare students with 21st century skills through the context of science and engineering content.

BOCES 4 Science is rolling out our last set of units in September. As with all of our units, these are aligned to NYSSLS, developed around phenomena, and engage students in authentic science and engineering practices. These new units include:

  • Grade K: Worm Scouts
  • Grade 2: Made of Matter
  • Grade 3: Invisible Forces
  • Grade 4: A Walk in the Park
  • Grade 5: Earth & Space Explorers

I welcome you to reach out to me to chat about anything and everything. I am always happy to answer any questions you might have about BOCES 4 Science units of instruction (or at least find the person who might have the answer).

Along with this newsletter is the 2020-2021 BOCES 4 Science Leasing Catalog and Summer 2020 Professional Development opportunities. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

2020-2021 BOCES 4 Science Leasing Catalog

The 2020-21 Leasing Catalog includes information about our units of study (including correlation to NYSSLS, suggested unit length, and description of concepts) along with ordering information.
