Nickel was discovered in 1751 by Axel Fredrick Cronsdent.

Origin of Name

The word nickel is a shortened translation of the German word kupfernickel. Kupfer means copper and the term nickel in German referred to Satan or the devil.

In the U.S., a 5 cent coin is called a "nickel" despite being made out of 75% copper and 25% nickel!
