A Message from Mrs. Caudill
"When eating lunch, always eat your cookie first". I had a first grader pass on this piece of unsolicited advice as I walked by her at lunch. She looked up at me and smiled with her teeth full of Oreo cookie crumbs. I happen to agree with her, because cookies are delicious. However, I couldn't help sitting down and asking her to tell me more.
So, I asked her, "Firstie, why should I eat my cookie first? Shouldn't I eat my lunch first and then my cookie?" She replied with wisdom far beyond her years. "You see, Mrs. Caudill" she said. "I'm gonna to eat my lunch, but cookies make me happy. I don't want to wait to be happy."
This weekend, I hope you follow this firstie's advice, some things can wait. Do not wait to be happy. Eat your cookie first.
Stay Safe,
Devon Caudill

Lead from the Heart! ❤️
February’s leadership trait is Kindness. We are inviting all families to create and share hearts with us in a digital way. You are invited to create a special Valentine/s to your child this year. You can make your heart as simple or as fancy as you’d like. Please think of a few ways that your child has followed the 7 Habits and write them on the heart. Some of our teachers may be asking you to send in hearts which you can do in addition to sharing them digitally. All Bobcat Families are invited to share how their child is leading from the heart!
This year you have the opportunity to share your hearts digitally, all you need to do is take a photo of your child’s heart(s) and email them to Mrs. Vertrees. vertreesbl@northvilleschools.org or you can post a virtual heart on our Amerman Padlet. We plan to share images of these hearts on daily announcements. We ask that all posts and photos be submitted by Friday, February 12th!

February Focus: Kindness! Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Every month Amerman Focuses on a new theme and Leader in Me Habit of the Month. The focus for the month of February is Kindness and our Habit of the Month is Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
This month’s Habit: Habit #5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
What this means: Listen before you talk. In order to communicate effectively, we must first understand each other.
“I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings.”
“I try to see things from their viewpoints.”
“I listen to others without interrupting.”
“I am confident in voicing my ideas.”
“I look people in the eyes when talking.”
How can I do this in my life?
1. Listen.
2. Put yourself in the other person’s place.
3. Notice a person’s body language, tone, and reflection in their voice.
Great Books for Habit #5-Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Alejandro’s Gift by Richard E. Albert
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown
Stellaluna by Janell Cannon
Jamaica’s Find by Juanita Havill
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka
If you would like to recognize your child for being proactive or using Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood at home, please fill out the following Bobcat Boost and return it to your child's teacher.
