Welcome to our special newsletter outlining planning going forward for Term 4.
Currently we have 8 resignations for Term 4 and likely more pending. This is not unexpected and considered planning has taken place. You may be aware Hawera is a "Hard to Staff" area and like all of New Zealand is experiencing critical staffing shortages.
At the end of Term 1 the decision was made to mentor a number of our Learning Assistants, the same personnel applied for registration under the "Limited Authority to Teach" category with the New Zealand Teaching Council. We now have five learning assistants who have this qualification and all five have an experienced mentor teacher who they can call on for immediate assistance.
These Learning Assistants will have the responsibility of a classroom next term.
We thank Daphne Bhana, our Learning Support Co-ordinator, who works in our school for stepping in to support our students at this time as well.
We also thank Rachel Williams, Tumuaki of Te Paepae o Aotea, for allowing her newly appointed classroom teachers to continue working four days a week at Hawera Intermediate.
Curriculum Plans for all of Term 4 have been developed by Senior Leadership - Trish Careswell and Dawn Mendes, who in turn have been supported by Bex Langton, our Curriculum adviser from Sharp Kinnade Consultancy.
Together they have listened to student voice and organised week long integrated curriculum learning around student interest. Learning is generic in areas and in others levelled to suit student need.
Students will be encouraged to bring a device in Term 4. We can assist in providing students without a device with either a chromebook or iPad, as we did in lockdown. Earbuds, earphones are a must. Phones are not considered useful in the classroom setting and as per normal will be discouraged or asked to be handed in to the office for safe keeping whilst on site.
Student work will be marked by classroom teachers, our teachers with "Limited Authority to Teach" are not expected to do this. Feedback to feedforward will be given to students via qualified teachers and overseen by our Deputy Principal, Trish Careswell.
Our timetable remains very similar to that which exists, more interactive afternoons are planned.
Dixon Block is our home whilst on the Hawera High School site, a map is attached. Intermediate students will occupy this space only, any High School student will be there by invitation only. The High School will continue to utilise one corridor and classrooms adjoining, these spaces separated from Intermediate student use.
Clear supervised play areas and boundaries are in place, with high school students following interval and lunch breaks.
Lunches will continue being delivered to Dixon Block for distribution and collection.
Students will NOT be permitted to use the canteen.
Staff will be at crossing points on High Street and South Road before and after school assisting students at specific points to ensure student safety.
The working logistics of Mel in the office space is still being worked through. We do know Mel will be our point of contact at the High School site, Trisha Careswell will have an office space in Dixon Block.
At this stage planning is looking pretty comprehensive however I am sure there may be things we have overlooked - please send through any queries for consideration.
Term 4 will be upon us before we know it!
