Cell Phone Usage Prohibited in School Zones
Effective September 1, 2017, new laws regarding cell phone use affect school zones and younger drivers and riders:
- In school zones, it is now a statewide law that unless the vehicle is stopped, or a handsfree device is used, drivers may not operate cell phones. This applies to buses as well as any other vehicles operating within the school's area as marked by local municipalities.
- Cellphones can be used for GPS navigation and music, though drivers might still get pulled over if officers suspect them of texting. "The key here is keeping your head up and keeping your hands on the wheel." Officers often see people with a knee on the steering wheel as they text with one hand. "If somebody cuts in front of them then they are immediately at a disadvantage to maneuver out of the way." (Dallas Morning News August 31)
- Parents that are driving in a school zone will also want to make sure that children under the age of 8 or smaller than 4 foot, 9 inches in height are secured in a proper child safety seat. The legislature passed new laws mandating a first offense fine of $25 and additional offenses will be met with $20 fines.
Attendance Matters!
- Chronic absence in kindergarten is associated with lower academic performance in first grade with the impact two times greater for students from lower income families.
- Compared to kindergarten students with average absences, chronically absent kindergarteners gained 14% fewer literacy skills.
- First grade chronically absent students gained 15% fewer literacy skills and 12% fewer math skills.
While there are many reasons for absenteeism, please know that attendance in lower grades is critical to student learning. Missing even one day has an impact on the students' understanding of literacy and math critical thinking skills.
