By Emma Arnold, Daniel Hicks, and Greg Phillips
What Is Bioethanol?
Bioethanol is a cheap and easy alternative to fossil fuels that we use today. It is a clean and doesn't harm the environment.
Advantages, Disadvantages, and How It Works
Advantages
- bioethanol is a renewable fuel
- ethanol produced from sugar cane in Brazil produces 50% less greenhouse gases than fossil fuels
Disadvantages
- bioethanol cannot be used as a fuel on it's own
- it absorbs water from the atmosphere
How It Works
- bioethanol can be used to blend with petrol
- it can be made from sugary, starchy parts of crops
A Company Can't Buy the Rights To Our Biofouel Yet
This reason is because we need time to test it more. Plus, it absorbs water from the atmosphere, which is a slight problem that we still are in the process of fixing.
Other Interesting Information
- producing 20 barrels of bioethanol requires just one barrel of crude oil
- from 2000 to 2011, growth in ethanol reduced gasoline prices by an average $0.29 per gallon.
- bioethanol reduces greenhouse gases machines by about 40% - 50% of gas emitions
