Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
In just 9 days we will end our first term of the 2019-2020 school year. This has been a wonderful year thus far, marked with many accolades from our students and staff. As we begin to wrap up the year, I encourage each of us to be reflective about our work. Remember your why; it is important to our continued success.
After listening to Mrs. Cuevas' Pirate Log video, I began to wonder. Do I think about the opportunity or the obligation? When I find myself stressed over a situation, am I really looking at what I can learn or teach, or am I thinking about the challenge? I beseech you to be meta-cognitive (thinking about the thought) about your work. In the same manner that Mr. Welcome challenged us to think about the opportunities that we have every day to change lives, we must find ways to see our work as something that we GET to do versus something we HAVE to do. As for me, I GET to work alongside the most talented team of educators ever assembled and on behalf of over 2,000 incredible Pirate learners, what a joy it is!
I contend, we all chose this noble profession to change lives. And, by all accounts - Pass Pirates - we are doing just that. Just this week, we had a child receive a full-ride scholarship to Princeton...let that sink in (6% acceptance rating). Of course, there is a lot to be said for Jimmy's commitment to eXcellence. However, I contend that you had a lot to do with his preparedness for such an opportunity. Routinely, students leave our hallowed halls and doors are opened to them that otherwise may not have been opened had it not been for their Pirate education. Kudos to you!
As we reflect on our honors and our road to success, remember to think about how you can find balance between work and home. Below is an article shared by Dr. Mandy Lacy that has some very practical ways to do just that. Happy reading!
With that, I submit the Captain’s Log. #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje

State Board Seeks Rising High School Junior to Serve as Advisor Starting in the 2020-21 School Year
FROM MDE: JACKSON, Miss – The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) is seeking applications from rising high school juniors who wish to serve as the junior student representative to the State Board starting in the 2020-21 school year.
The SBE student representative program includes one high school junior and one high school senior who serve as non-voting SBE members and provide input on policy decisions that affect Mississippi public schools. The current junior SBE representative, Omar Jamil of DeSoto County Schools, will serve as the senior representative in 2020-21.
Through a competitive process, the SBE will appoint one rising junior to serve as a student representative for a two-year term starting in 2020-21.
Student representatives are responsible for attending monthly SBE meetings and any standing committees or subcommittees to which they are assigned. Student representatives are excused from school to attend SBE meetings as official school business.
The SBE adopted a policy in 2018 outlining the criteria for adding student representatives to the State Board.
Students who wish to apply to serve as the SBE junior representative starting in the 2020-21 school year must complete the application posted on the MDE website: https://www.mdek12.org/MBE/Student-Representatives
Completed applications are due by 5 p.m. January 31, 2020. For questions, contact Donna Hales at 601-359-2331 or dhales@mdek12.org.
