Jordan's Jots
Dear Luxford Families,
Happy April! March was a long, but fun month here at Luxford. We wrapped up our One School, One Book event with the “What Do You Do with a Problem.”
April is a busy month at school. Our Pre-K-5 students will continue to have asynchronous instruction and remediation on Mondays. April is Autism acceptance month, the month of the military child and math month. We will celebrate all of this at Luxford in April! We will also begin kindergarten registration for the 2021-2022 school year. If you know of anyone who has a kindergarten aged child for next year, please feel free to share this newsletter with them as there is more information below.
We officially made it to Spring Break and are returning refreshed and ready to teacher our students everything we can through the last quarter of school. Throughout the last nine-weeks of school, we will be teaching the curriculum and continuing to work on skills to close gaps caused by the pandemic. It is imperative that students log on Mondays for any remediation time and to complete individualized assignments to help build their skills. We want students to be as successful as possible going into next year.
We will also participate in the SOL assessments beginning on May 17. Although the Virginia State Board of Education waived the requirement for SOL assessments to be used to determine accreditation for schools, the U.S. Department of Education did not waive federal assessment requirements. During the May and June SOL testing window, students in grades 3-5 are expected to take SOL tests to measure achievement of the Virginia Standards of Learning. Please see schedule below. More information will be forth-coming.
I hope that you and your families had a relaxing week off from school and took the time to unplug, get outside, travel, and relax. This has been a challenging year and our students and community are rising to the challenge on a daily basis. We could not be prouder of our students and families.

Month of the Military Child
Dear Luxford Elementary Staff and Families,
April is designated as the “Month of the Military Child,” to recognize and highlight the important role military children play in the armed forces community. The Month of the Military Child is a time set aside to applaud and celebrate military families and their children for their daily sacrifices. Military families and their children are “Superheroes” at Luxford Elementary School!
Let’s show appreciation to our military families and their children for their selfless contributions to our school, community, and country during “Month of the Military Child,” Spirit Week, April 20-23, 2021. A banner will be displayed in the school for all military students with student created flags expressing “BEING A MILITARY CHILD IS….” Ribbons will be placed on the banner to represent military students who were not able to turn in flags.
Also, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) joins the Department of Defense, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), and the military community in celebrating April as the Month of the Military Child. If your family is military-affiliated, please click the button below to complete a form and upload a photo!
If you have a picture of your family we would love to have the opportunity to share it during our morning announcements in April as we honor and show our appreciation to our military-affiliated Dragons. We thank you for your service!
The name and photo associated with your Google account will be recorded when you upload files and submit this form.
