What can we learn from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

Dear HBMS Families,

I hope this communication finds you enjoying a three-day weekend.

Below, you’ll find a collection of nine memorable quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will be sharing these with our students this week, so I'm sharing these, in case you wanted to discuss these at home as well. If you have a few extra minutes, below you'll also find a link to the "I Have a Dream" speech, in it's entirety (17 minutes and 50 seconds) along with a full transcript of the speech.

9 quotes from MLK's famous speeches and writings about

education, justice, hope, perseverance and freedom

1. "Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase."

2. "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

3. "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

4. "The time is always right to do what is right."

5. "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ "

6. "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."

7. "Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education."

8. "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

9. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

If you're interested in listening to and where applicable, sharing the "I Have a Dream" speech in it's entirety, you can find the audio (with a transcript) at the following NPR link:

We're grateful for the important role you play in partnering to make the school-home connection a success!
