The Sequiota Scoop
Monthly School Newsletter - November 2022
A Note from Mrs. Wagner
Thank you for attending our Parent Teacher Conferences last week! If you haven't been able to meet with your child's teacher they will continue to reach out until you find a new time as it is the expectation that we meet with 100% of our families.
Our focus this month will be our clothing driving for our sister school Weaver and the PTA Clothing bank. We are asking for the following items:
- NEW shoes (sizes for K-5 aged students)
- New Socks and underwear in all sizes (Kindergarten ages-adult)
- Gently used or new adult coats (preferably ones that are easy to wash)
Please enjoy your family time this month with the Holidays and breaks. I know that time is precious and goes all too fast. I will soak up my time with Cole and our family for sure!

Conscious Discipline
One of the skills we work with students on is the Skill of Encouragement. This skill is focused on teaching the power of unity: we are all in this together.
We use the following language to encourage students:
- “You did it! You ___ so____. That was helpful.”
- Example: You did it! You put on your shoes so we can head out the door. That was helpful!
- The goal is to notice instead of judge as the basis for encouragement.
Check out the short video below for more information about Encouragement.
You may find more information at https://consciousdiscipline.com/
- This approach is helpful at home and school.

Attention 5th Grade Parents
Fifth-graders may apply for transitional transfer for the 2023-2024 school year beginning Nov. 2
SPS fifth-graders have the opportunity to request a transitional transfer for the 2023-2024 school year to a middle school of their choice that is open to transfers. Students interested in this option may submit requests between 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, and 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.
This type of transfer is offered as part of Springfield Public Schools’ open enrollment option. If your child plans to attend the middle school assigned to them based on the student’s home address, no action is needed.
If your child is on transfer to a current elementary school and you would like for them to attend the connected middle school you will need to submit a request to transitionally transfer to that middle school.
The transitional transfer request form for the 2023-2024 school year must be completed electronically. Requests are granted on a first come, first served basis determined by an electronic time/date stamp.

Visitors & Volunteers
In order to be in the building as a visitor during school hours, you must register with our visitor management system in the front office. This requires a driver's license.
If volunteering for the school during school hours we ask that you complete the volunteer application and background check.
For more information please visit this website: https://www.sps.org/volunteer OR contact Sara Atkinson our school secretary and volunteer coordinator in the front office.
Lunch Visitors
- All visitors must sign in through the hall pass visitor system. This requires a photo i.d. the first time you sign-in.
- Please limit the number of visitors who come for lunch to two adults. Non-SPS siblings should not attend with the visitors.
- Please save these visits for special occasions - students need to interact with their peers at lunch.
- Families must sit at the visitor tables with their child only (other students will not be allowed to sit with you). There are two designated tables to sit at (look for the signs that say "Visitor Table"). Please do not bring food for other students either.
- Please do not wander around the lunch room interacting with all students. This is a connection for you and your child.
- Once we start dumping trash for your child's grade level please say your goodbyes and have them return to their class tables.
- Please show up on time. It's hard for students to watch their peers eat while waiting.
- Please refrain from taking pictures with other students in the background. Some of our students are on a media block and we do not want to dishonor their parent's wishes.
