Memorial School
January News
Happy New Year!
We hope that all of our families enjoyed the winter vacation. It’s hard to believe that it is already mid-January. Our students experienced a positive transition back from the vacation. Many students have been sharing their goals for the second half of the year with us. We are proud to share that our students have set high expectations for themselves. Be sure to check in with your child about his/her goals.

3rd Annual Memorial Super Bowl - 2/3-2/7
Let the competition begin! For the third year, Memorial School will host our own football-themed competition called the Souper Bowl. Starting Monday, February 3rd through Friday, February 7th, students are asked to bring in non-perishable items to support the Medway Village Church Food Pantry. Please see the attached document for considerations when donating. Items in high demand include:
Boxed goods – Cereal, rice/pasta sides, rice pilaf, boxed pasta, meal starters (tuna helper, etc.), oatmeal, coffee, tea, cocoa, granola bars, cookies, crackers, & cake/brownie/pancake mix
Canned goods - jars of pasta sauce, small jars of mayonnaise, hearty soups (i.e. Progresso, Campbell’s Chunky, Healthy Choice, etc.), canned chicken, veggies, potatoes, fruit, baked beans, tuna, jelly, condiments, Fluff, salad dressing, Chef Boyardee
School snacks - multi-packs of fruit cups, cookies, crackers, pretzels, goldfish, graham crackers, fruit snacks, pudding, & other snacks
Weekend Backpack items – Barilla Ready Pasta pouches (microwaveable), individual cups of macaroni and cheese, individual cups of cereal, fruit cups in 100% juice
Non-food items - toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, laundry detergent, dish soap, deodorant, hand soap/sanitizer, diapers (sizes 4-6), baby wipes (no baby food please)
Our fourth grade advocacy leaders will count the number of items students bring into school. Class tallies will be added together to form grade-level tallies. The grade that brings in the most items will win the competition and be crowned the 2020 Burke-Memorial Souper Bowl Champions! Thank you in advance for your support of the Medway Village Church Food Pantry!
Community Education Offers a Ukulele for Beginners Program at Memorial School
The Community Education Department is excited to offer a new winter after school program to all Burke-Memorial School students! Ukulele for Beginners is designed to help students create their own music while learning simple chords and songs. Students will learn the basic elements of music in a fun and harmonious way. From the easiest one-chord songs, students are learning and experiencing the difference between rhythm and beat, hearing harmonies and either singing or playing melodies. Ukuleles will be provided at each session. However, if your child has a ukulele at home, he/she is welcome to bring it to the program.
All students will be dismissed directly to the Memorial Gym at the end of the school day for attendance. Please pick-up your child at the school’s main doors at 3:45pm.

Changes to Transportation Routines
Please take a moment to read the following reminders about changes to transportation routines for students:
- For safety reasons, children are not permitted to ride home on another child’s bus.
- If you need to change your child’s typical dismissal or transportation routine, please send a note into school that morning with your child's full name describing the change.
- If you are calling the office to make an unexpected change to transportation routines, please do so before noon.
Cold Weather Reminders
As the weather starts to get colder, we make every attempt to get students outside for fresh air and exercise each day. While we do not like to call indoor recess, there are times when we must to ensure the safety of our students and staff. When making this decision, we consider the actual temperature, the wind-chill factor and the condition of our school yard. Please also remember that recess is 25 minutes long. When sending your student to school, please ensure that your child is prepared to go outside for recess. Weather conditions change frequently during the course of the day and it is difficult to predict what the weather will look like during recess time. Parents are asked to put student names or classroom numbers on all winter gear so that we can help reunite items with owners should they get separated.
