Flu Clinic Update
* November 9, 2 to 5 p.m., Chatham DPW Garage, 221 Crowell Rd. - Drive-through flu clinic
You must register in advance at https://clinics.barnstablecountyhealth.org/clinics/register/33
Please note that per the Massachusetts Department of Health, the influenza vaccine is required for all children 6 months of age or older who are attending Massachusetts child care, pre-school, kindergarten, K-12, and colleges and universities. The new vaccine requirement is an important step to reduce flu-related illness and the overall impact of respiratory illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will be expected to have received a flu vaccine by December 31, 2020 for the 2020-2021 influenza season, unless a medical or religious exemption is provided.
Dear Monomoy Families,
I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for the great participation in our recent Food Services survey. The responses have been very informative and helpful, especially in our current situation. You can see the survey responses here. We, as a Food Services Department, care deeply for the students we serve and always strive to offer both healthy and interesting choices. We have already updated our offerings to include more hot meals and more choices in general. We will also be implementing a new interactive menu program that will provide instant nutritional information for all menu items. This will be up and running by January 2021.
Again, thank you for your time and understanding and please always feel free to offer suggestions either to myself directly at gpetracca@monomoy.edu or to any of the food services staff.
Thank you!

Virtual exit poll conducted by Civics students
Over the last five days, Civics students at Monomoy Regional High School conducted a virtual exit poll of 319 voters in our community. Students interviewed members of their household and reached out to other family and friends by phone and asked them a series of questions about how they voted or planned to vote.
For overall results, they found that 52% of respondents voted for Biden compared to 40% for Trump. They also had Markey ahead of O’Connor 58% to 42%, Keating ahead of Brady and Manley 57% to 31% and 11%, Question 1 prevailing with 81% support and Question 2 failing with only 45%.
On the issues, the top one surprisingly was the economy cited by 33% followed by candidate character at 21% and the pandemic and health care at 19%. This may reflect the relatively light impact of the coronavirus on Cape Cod compared to the economic effects of the pandemic.
Only 17% of respondents reported that the debates impacted their vote, down from 35% in 2016, and those saying they were influenced by advertising fell to 9% from 17%. Only 6% decided who to support in the last week and only 13% in the last month, with 81% having decided earlier. While this is a big shift from the 43%/14%/42% response to this question at the March primary this year, it is very similar to past presidential elections in our polls.
By age, we found a large disparity in the presidential vote. Those under 40 favored Biden 75% to 23%, those 40-60 preferred Biden 50% to 45% and those over 60 favored Trump 51% to 44%. There were similar disparities in the other races, and notably on Question 2 which 56% of the youngest voters supported compared to 44% and 34% of older voters.
The gender gap was the largest we have ever recorded at over 20 points. Women favored Biden 61% to 32% while men favored Trump 53% to 39%. Similarly, when asked if the government should play a large or small role in solving societal problem, women were more likely to say a large role 51% to 38% for men, and when asked if our government should do more to help immigrants or more to restrict them, women were more likely to say help 73% to 52%
By education level, we found that both those with a high school education and those with a college education favored Biden by more than 20 points, and it was only the most educated group - those with graduate study or degrees, that favored Trump 47% to 40%. This seemed different from what is usually reported about Trump’s support, perhaps because in our survey those with a high school education tended to be young, the group that most strongly supports Biden, and the higher educated group was the oldest.
By religion, Protestants and people with no religion each favored Biden by 18 points, and Catholics were more divided, favoring Biden 47% to 45%. This is surprising for Protestants, since they were a group that included almost as many Republicans as Democrats (29% to 30%), similar to Catholics (25% to 27%), while the no religion group was more Democratic (38% to 23%).
Independents in our survey are usually the swing voters, but this time they split evenly, favoring Biden only 41% to 40% - by comparison, they favored Keating over Brady 2 to 1. This may be because 45% of the independents in our survey cited the economy as the top issue, an issue that favored Trump in our survey - this may again reflect the local impacts of this year. There were more Republicans crossing party lines on the Presidential vote than Democrats - 11% to 4%.
When we compare Trump voters and Biden voters in our survey, the difference in the issues cited as most important was dramatic. For Trump voters, 69% cited the economy as the most important issue, compared to 12% of Biden voters. The biggest issues for Biden voters were the candidates’ character (33%) and the pandemic and health care (30%).
Lastly, we saw the expected contrasts in the methods of voting that people used this year. 27% of our respondents voted by mail, and they favored Biden 70% to 21%. Early voters were 32% of our survey and they were evenly divided for President. And the 41% who intended to vote in person today favored Trump by four points.
Thank you to the students for doing the work in seeking out interviewees, and thank you to the respondents for taking the time to talk with them. These conversations about voting and politics are some of the most important learning experiences that our students have in our Civics course. We look forward to the next election!

OCTOBER SCHOLAR ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
Amy Hinesley
I have had the privilege of coaching Amy Hinesley for the past three field hockey seasons. She is hardworking, ambitious and determined. She motivates her teammates through her work ethic and positive attitude. She is one of our four captains for the 2020 field hockey season. While this season has been an adjustment for all players, Amy rises to each new challenge with positivity and tenacity. It is an honor to nominate Amy Hinesley for Monomoy’s October Athlete of the Month.
Monomoy has completed 10 games this season and Amy has played in every game. She is a very versatile player, who is willing to play anywhere on the field. She gives 110% in everything she does and she is one of the most coachable players I have ever worked with.
Amy has 4 goals and 2 assists in our 10 games so far. She hustles to every ball and works her hardest for her team. Off the field, Amy’s accomplishments are just as spectacular. She is Monomoy’s top student with a number 1 ranking out of 125 seniors. She was recently presented with the Harvard University Book Award for academic excellence and has been the top student in her class since 8th grade. I know Amy will do amazing things in the future and I can’t wait to follow all of her accomplishments!
Miles Boyle
Miles Boyle is a quiet, confident young man who is willing to do the hard work that doesn’t get the headlines or noticed in the score sheet. Miles joined the team as a senior and honestly, I was unsure of the impact he may have. Miles has worked his way into being a key member of our starting team as a defensive midfielder, a position vital in stopping the opposition attack and initiating our own. Miles is self-motivated and through his work ethic in training has improved to the point where he is a significant part of our success this season. Miles is a polite, respectful young man who is a joy to coach and watch play. Coach Keith Clark
Miles has plans to attend a four-year college and has challenged himself each year with his academics. Miles is known to many for his participation in the MRHS morning show and has been a staple in TV Production class for three years. He has participated in the Peer Leadership course both junior and senior year. Notably, Miles is the Vice-President of his senior class and has held this position since the 8th grade. He has a 3.7 GPA and despite a sports injury in sophomore year, he has worked hard to rehab himself and return to sports. Miles' guidance counselor, Lindsay Ginnetty, shared that one of the most admirable traits that Miles has is his ability to bring people together. "I have come to know Miles as someone who has the ability to naturally lead others around him and adapt to any environment he is in. He has an entrepreneurial spirit, has goals for his future, and I have seen him grow as a student and person in the past three years."
WEEKLY ATHLETICS ROUNDUP
WEEK OF 11/2/20
BOYS SOCCER - Sam Higgins
Boys Soccer started the week with back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday.
On Monday, the boys traveled away to a tough Sturgis West team. A good team win that ended 3-2. A great performance by Troy Olson, who had 2 goals, and a showcase of unbelievable skill with an absolute screamer of a goal for his second. Other great performances go out to the midfield led by Duncan Ramler and Miles Boyle, and the defense led by Josh Coughlan, Wesley Ulrich, and Trey Cox. Sean Deveau with yet another breathtaking performance. How does he make those saves? Braedin Yarletts scored the key third goal to give the Sharks the victory.
On Tuesday, the boys traveled away again, this time to Sandwich. After conceding twice early in the game, the boys battled to keep the game in reach by moving the ball well and working hard. Good performances from Sam Higgins, Duncan Ramler, Miles Boyle, and Colin Moore powered the midfield. Troy Olson cut Sandwich’s lead in half off of a great through ball from Miles Boyle. Unfortunately, the Sharks conceded a third goal and ended the game with a loss 3-1.
Lastly, the boys played Rising Tide at home on Thursday. Dominating the ball, the boys were putting together strings of passes, using 1 to 2 touches. Key players tied to this ball movement were Colin Moore, Miles Boyle, and Duncan Ramler. These midfielders kept the ball well, and when needed could count on the center backs Wesley Ulrich and Josh Coughlan for support. However, the boys conceded late and lost 1-0. Overall, a good team performance.
GIRLS SOCCER - Maggie Dever
11/2 Vs. Sturgis West
The Monomoy Sharks played a toe to toe game with the Sturgis West Navigators. Unfortunately, West was able to put one away resulting in a 1-0 loss for the sharks. Great game by Kathryn Nash! The freshmen held down the defensive line and really made an effort to stop the ball from reaching the keeper! Good effort Sharks!
11/3 Vs. Sandwich
The Monomoy Girls Sharks hosted the Knights on October 3rd in an evenly matched game with an end result of 0-0. Great job by Josie Ganshaw, keeping that shutout on the net. Amazing defensive midfield play by Maggie Dever and Melissa Velasquez! Way to shut them down ladies!!! Great attacking pressure by freshmen Karah Deveau! Good work guys! The girls team wants to say a quick thank you to all of the Monomoy parents and supporters who come out and cheer them on! Shoutout to Mr. Bowman for always running the clock for us! THANK YOU
11/5 @ Rising Tide
The sharks left the tank for their last regular-season game today on October 5th against Rising Tide in Plymouth. The Monomoy girls soccer team lost a tough one with a score of 3-1!! Great goal by Maddie Crossen. Amazing field play by Lexi Hyora, really stepping it up in the midfield! Way to work ladies! Shoutout to the seniors (Leah Nash, Maggie Dever, Josie Ganshaw), we love you! The girls placed 4th overall in the Cape and Islands League. Get ready for tourney next weekend!!! “We expect a socially distanced crowd. Get rowdy and come cheer on your sharks” - girls soccer team!!
FIELD HOCKEY - Amy Hinesley
On Saturday morning, our girls took a tough loss to Nauset 2-1 after a hard-fought game. Carly Dimock put a beautiful tip into the net in the first half off of a shot from Digiovanni. There were strong defensive performances from Nikki Awalt, Alexis Culver, Jane Howard, and Lanie Fritsch. They took another loss on Wednesday to Sandwich 4-0, with a strong performance from goalie Caroline Upson. Regardless, the girls remained strong and look to Falmouth on Friday.
BOYS GOLF - Grady Howell
On Wednesday at the beautiful Willowbend golf course in Mashpee, our top players from the year went to go represent the sharks amongst the other Cape and islands teams. With some of the first tee times starting early on in the morning, the boy's golf team was battling it out for the entire day. Although we did not find ourselves on the podium, we had great performances from our freshman Christian Whittle and eighth-grader Casey Huse. We want to thank Willowbend for hosting this tournament during a difficult year, and we are looking forward to showing our growth in 2021.
CROSS COUNTRY - Courteney Dery
The Cross Country team faced Sturgis East on the 3rd, with both Monomoy and Sturgis coming to the race with undefeated seasons. But sadly for the Sharks, they had their first loss Wednesday. Both the boys and girls teams have always done great in past seasons, but almost never have both teams made it so far in the season with nothing but wins! The team has performed extraordinarily well in their regular season, and head off to leagues this Saturday! To kick off the placements, for the boys, Ryder Robbins came in first with a time of 18:21. James Machnik with a time of 18:51 coming in 5th. Aidan Melton finishes off the top 3 Monomoy runners with a time of 20:41 and coming in tenth. For the girls, Rhiannon Vos came in first with a time of 21:30. Courteney Dery finished third with a time of 22:29. And wrapping up for the girls, Sophie Machnik finished with a time of 24:33 coming in seventh.
