Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - May 9, 2022
Washburne Families,
Thank you to our PTO and all Washburne families for your kindness and support as we celebrated our teachers last week during teacher appreciation week! It looks like we will finally be getting some warmer weather this week, and it will be great to have students utilize the courtyards again for lunch. Please remind your students to bring a water bottle with them so they can stay hydrated throughout the day.
Washburne students will be MAP testing this week on Wednesday, May 11th and next week on Tuesday, May 17th. Please make sure that your child brings his/her fully charged iPad to school on these dates. Additionally, lunch is served later on these days. Please provide a snack for your child as we will provide time for one earlier in the day.
It is time to order your school supply kits for the 2022-23 school year. The deadline for ordering is July 1st. Supply kits will be delivered to your home two weeks before the start of school in August. CLICK HERE to order.
Last, but most definitely not least, we would like to wish all the Mothers a Happy Mother’s Day, and we hope you were able to enjoy some well-deserved appreciation yesterday.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
Window to Washburne
Drama and Improv is one of our newest elective courses that students at Washburne can take. Led by our theater teacher, Ms. Markos, students learn improvisation techniques and how to work with one another to create a successful scene. After students perform, they receive feedback not only from Ms. Markos, but from their classmates as well. To be successful, our students need to demonstrate many of their characteristics of our Portrait of a Graduate, including strong communication and collaboration skills. Successful improv requires a skillful balance of give and take, and our students are learning how to build off each other’s ideas.
Kudos to Ms. Markos for bringing this new course to Washburne and for our students for performing successful scenes.
What's Happening in Related Studies
Students in Industrial Arts are currently working on their C02 car project. This is a five-week activity, in which students use the engineering design loop to create a car. During this project students learn about thumbnail sketches, multi view drawings, and the science that goes into making a fast car. Once the car has been created, they test the efficiency of their designs using a wind tunnel to measure drag, a fog tunnel that highlights the vehicles’ aerodynamic qualities, and a test track that measures speed.

Bike Safety Initiatives
As we enjoy more spring-like weather, more students will be riding bikes and walking to school. The District and Winnetka Police Department recently sent this letter to our school community on Bike Safety efforts.
In the letter, we shared information on safety pledges for students, safe route maps for each elementary school, and noted we are reintroducing the elementary “Bike Rodeo” event for second grade, hosted collaboratively with Scout Troop 20, Green Bay Cycles, and our school PTOs on the following dates:
Greeley: Wed, 5/4, 4:00pm (5/5 rain date)
Hubbard Woods: Wed, 5/11, 4:00pm (5/12 rain date)
Crow Island: Wed, 5/18, 4:00pm (5/19 rain date). The Winnetka Police will be present at this particular event for community engagement and photo opportunities.
At this event, second grade students will learn basic guidance about proper bike and helmet use. If your family is unable to attend the event at your child(ren)’s home school, you are welcome to attend another event.
