Fall TAG Updates
Liberty High School
Brieanna Douthit, TAG Coordinator, douthitb@hsd.k12.or.us
My role is to support staff in designing instruction to meet the needs of accelerated learners, support families and their TAG students in reaching their educational and personal goals, and ensure that Liberty is operating in accordance with the laws, statutes, and board policy related to the state TAG mandate.
In addition to serving as TAG Coordinator I am the English/language arts Department Leader and I teach sophomore language arts at Liberty High School.
What does TAG look like at Liberty?
- Students at the high school level are encouraged to self-advocate when they feel they need more of a challenge in their classes.
- Each teacher pre-assesses students on their skill level and designs instruction to provide opportunities for all students to grow and improve.
- Each course has a TAG plan to address the needs of accelerated learners. These can include tiered assignments, extension opportunities, learning contracts, connection to real-world experiences in the subject area, etc. Students are encouraged to communicate with their teachers if they would like to access these opportunities. TAG plans will be available online.
- TAG students are identified in Synergy with a blue star so teachers are aware of each student’s TAG status.
- 8th Grade SBAC scores are reviewed to identify TAG students who have not previously been identified.
- Regular emails update students and parents of enrichment opportunities.
What opportunities should my TAG student take advantage of?
- High school is the time for your student to pursue their interests through specialized coursework and extracurricular activities.
- Liberty offers many electives through our College and Career Pathways programs that will put them on the path to participate in student-run enterprises and to pursue individual interests and passions through open-ended, project-based curriculum.
- Liberty offers a wide range of AP Courses in science, math, language arts, social studies, world languages, and the arts.
- Liberty offers a wide range dual credit opportunities.
- Extra-curricular opportunities also allow students to problem-solve, extend thinking, and collaborate with peers with similar interests. Programs such as Band, Choir, Drama, Speech and Debate, Robotics, and many others are available at Liberty.
