The Elements and the Periodic Table (periodic table)
In 1869, a Russian chemist named Dmitri Mendeleev created the first way to organize the elements. He called it the Periodic Table. He arranged the elements in order of their atomic masses. Henry Mosely then arranged it in order of increasing atomic number. It is still ordered this way in today's periodic tables.Today the table is organized in periods and groups, or families. Periods are the horizontal rows going across the table. Groups, also known as families are the vertical columns going up and down the table. Some of them include the Alkali metals, Alkaline Earth metals, Halogens, and Noble Gases. The table is made up of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Groups 3-12 are known as the transition elements. Groups 1 and 2 and 13-18 are known as the representative elements. Then the table splits. These elements in the split are known as the Lanthanide elements and Actinide elements.
