Lance's Ledger

January 26 - 30 at Central Elementary

Positive Impact

I received some very wonderful and sincere parent feedback from a PTO officers after the January 20th meeting. "It was wonderful to have teachers at the PTO meeting! It felt like a real partnership." These positive comments were heartfelt and the particular parent who shared them went on to express how appreciative she was of the after-school commitments made by teachers during the movie night and PTO Meeting night. She went on to explain that she knows teachers work very hard and it is hard to come back at night. She also shared that being a parent is very hard and she works all day too. But her parting comment summed up the theme of her original statement. She shared, "Last night it was good to share the load and work as a real team."

Thank you teachers and all staff for the "extras" you are doing for our kids, parents and community. Your efforts to reach out to our school community are noticed. You make a difference!

Thomas & Payne Conduct SIPPS Inservice

Literacy Specialist Stephanie Thomas and Paraprofessional Denise Payne shared a valuable Tier 2 support tool during the January 22 presentation of SIPPS: Beginning Level. Participant and Special Education Teacher Melissa Jones noted how SIPPS serves to enable teachers to deliver explicit direct phonics instruction to students. Stephanie and Denise will present the extension level SIPPS program on Tuesday, January 27 from 3:40 - 4:40 PM. PD has been approved for the session.

What Makes a Great Teacher

Take a trip back in time with retired news anchor Diane Sawyer to find that great teachers take responsibility for the learning of all their students, set high expectations, and help their students make significant progress. The message in the following video clip remains timeless and true.

Half Day Teacher Absences

As mentioned at our last staff meeting, I was asked for clarification regarding the "official" report and dismissal times involved when teachers find it necessary to take a half-day absence or personal day. For Central (in-town school) the morning half-day would be from 8:20 - 11:55 AM; the afternoon time is 11:55 AM - 3:30 PM. In most instances the substitute should arrive 5-10 minutes before the teacher leaves to allow time for teacher and sub to touch base when applicable.

If a teacher's lunch break overlaps a leave or arrival time the teacher is free to leave earlier or arrive later. I believe teachers have done a very good job working out the details and alerting secretaries or me when they are leaving the building. I appreciate and thank you for the courtesy.

Balanced Calendar Community Forums

A reminder that three community forums regarding the possibility of moving the District to a balance calendar are scheduled for January 27 at 7 PM; January 28 at 9 AM; and January 28 at 6 PM. All events will be held in the DMS Community Room. Staff members are welcome to attend the evening presentations.

Brag Tag Lists

Brag Tags for second quarter Cardinal Code, Perfect Attendance, Outstanding Attendance, and Cool to Care will be awarded by mid-February for students who have earned the honors. Mrs. Wright will run an attendance report for teachers. Cardinal Code recipients will need to be recorded on a class list sheet by teachers and turned in to the office by 11 AM Tuesday, January 27. PTO is ordering the Brag Tags that will be distributed through classroom teachers. Thank you so very much for your assistance.
