Additional Information on Standards Based Grading
Trimester Class ~ Art
Letters grades have been a part of our educational history for decades. As parents, we are very accustomed to averaging of grades and the A, B, C, D, and F grading system. Many districts have shifted to Standards-Based Grading. After much discussion and focus on the curriculum, it was decided for our art class grade to shift to standards-based.
The purpose of Standards-Based Grading and the Standards-Based Report Card based on a 4 point scale is to provide more detailed feedback to parents regarding the progress their children are making towards specific learning standards at their grade level. A Standards-Based approach allows parents and students to understand more clearly what is expected of students and how to help them be successful in their educational program. This change is to better communicate and provide feedback on what students are expected to know and be able to do.
How Does Standards-Based Grading Differ From Traditional Grading?
With the traditional grading system, many elements are combined to determine your child’s grade – test scores, quizzes, completed homework, group work, classroom participation – then, the average of the semester’s work equates into a percentage that correlates with a specific letter grade. Standards-Based Grading separates those elements. Standards-Based Grading measures a student’s mastery of grade-level standards by prioritizing the most recent, consistent level of performance.
The Benefits of Standards-Based Grading
For Students:
- Learning targets are clearly defined and aligned with state standards.
- Students are offered multiple opportunities and ways through which to demonstrate proficiency
- Students monitor their own progress toward the achievement of specified targets
- Specific feedback on progress helps build self-esteem, pride, and motivation for students
For Parents:
- Report card grades are less mysterious and have more meaning
- Parents are aware of exactly what their child knows, is able to do, and next steps for progress
- Parents know in what areas their child needs more support
- Parents are empowered to increase their child's confidence and help their student set goals
It will be important that we shift our mindset when thinking of grades under this type of grading system. The ultimate goal is growth. For example, traditionally we think percentages. When we see 2 out of 4, we automatically think 50%. With Standards-Based Grading that would mean progressing or moving toward meeting that standard. Our Trimester classes are not figured into Honor Roll rankings.
