Broad Meadows Middle School Community Update 11.5.2023
Broad Meadows Middle School Community,
We had another great week as our students continue to build connections and routines as we move into the first full week of November. Please enjoy just a few pictures below which show off the hard work of our budding scientists as well as some of the artwork designed by our 6th and 8th grade.
Please remember that on Tuesday, November 7th, there will be no school due to Election Day. We do welcome you to stop by the BMMS Bake Sale which will be held during voting hours by the Broad Meadows Middle School Gym. Please also note that Wednesday, November 8th will be an early release day and that Friday, November 10th will also be a day of no school in honor of Veteran's Day.
As we look ahead in the month of November and into early December, we would like to remind our families that we will be hosting our annual Turkey Triathalon and Bogan Bowl at school on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Wednesday, November 22nd will be a 10:55 AM release day and we ask our students to support our Student Council Food Drive by donating either $2.00 or a non-perishable food item to support the BMMS Student Council Food Drive. Donations can be made in home base from now until the 21st of November.
We also look ahead to the end of the trimester on December 7th and want to remind families that trimester 1 conference will be held on Thursday, December 7th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM and on Wednesday, December 13th from 1:00 - 3:00 PM and 5:00 - 7:00 PM. More information about signing up for conferences will come later in the month.
We are also hosting our December Music Concert for all students in band and chorus on Monday, December 18th at 6:00 PM in our newly designed auditorium. Please keep the date open and plan to come out and support our talented musicians.
We also want to remind you of a great QPS Parent Academy which will be hosted on Wednesday of this week with Dr. Watson. Dr. Watson is the created and founder of Open Parachute which is the Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum that all Broad Meadows students will be working with this year during SSB blocks. Please see the flier below for more information about the event!
Finally, we would like to ask the support of all parents and guardians who drive to and from Broad Meadows every day. Please remember during arrival and dismissal in the mornings and afternoons to follow all posted signage and to please be careful of students in the crosswalks especially at the intersection of Sea Street and Moffat Street. Thank you for your support as we work to keep all students safe.
As we look ahead to Veteran's Day, we would like to offer our sincere thanks on behalf of the BMMS Staff to all those who have served in our armed forces and also wish a Happy Diwali for all who will be celebrating next Sunday. Have a great week!

Chromebooks
At this point, all students in grades 6-8 should have a school assigned Chromebook. To support us at school we ask that you work with your student to find a place where they can charge their Chromebook every evening so that it is ready to use every morning. Students should bring their Chromebook to school each day.
If a Chromebook breaks we would ask your student to return it to the main office and we will provide your student a replacement. If a Chromebook is lost, please work with your student to locate it. If it is not found, families may incur the charge of a replacement Chromebook per the user agreement. Please feel free to reach out to the main office during school hours if we can support you with this process.

QPS Student Personal Electronic Device Policy
Quincy Public Schools Student Personal Electronic Device Policy -
The use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices during the school day negatively impacts student engagement with learning activities and is often a source of disciplinary interventions. This Quincy Public Schools Student Electronic Device Policy is intended to remove this source of distraction by eliminating the use of personal electronic devices (including, but not limited to, cell phones, tablets, smart watches, earbuds, and headphones) during academic instructional time. All Quincy Public Schools students in Grades 4-12 have been issued a Chromebook to be used during instructional time when online access is required.
Therefore, for high school students:
1. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices may not be used for any purpose during classes, but are allowed during study or lunch periods and while passing between classes.
2. All cell phones and personal electronic devices must be turned off (not simply on silent or vibrate mode) during class time.
3. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices should be put away and not be visible during class time. Staff members may request to have students place their device in a designated storage location within the classroom.
4. Exceptions to this Policy may be made by the Principal or designee and by individual teachers to accommodate a student’s IEP or 504 plan.
For elementary and middle school students, cell phones and other personal electronic devices should be turned off and safely secured in a locker or backpack during the school day.
DISCIPLINE
Students who do not comply with the terms of the Policy will be subject to progressive discipline as follows:
First offense: The student will be required to turn over their personal electronic device(s) in the main office. The device(s) will be returned to the student at the end of the school day.
Second offense: The student will be required to turn over their personal electronic device(s) in the main office. The student’s parent/guardian will be called and the device(s) will be returned to parent/guardian.
Third offense: Same as the second offense above. In addition, the student will be prohibited from bringing any personal electronic devices to school for the remainder of the school year.
Students committing repeated violations of this policy may be subject to additional disciplinary actions, consistent with the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook.
