Slaves in America

Slavery in America

Slavery began when European merchants started the Triangular Trade. The Triangular Trade was between Europe, Africa, and America and together they all traded different items including slaves, cotton, and rum. The ships with slaves were called slave ships and the slaves were extremely closely packed in the cargo holds. The New World needed slaves because they needed to start farms and build new buildings. The slaves were needed in the South to run the cotton farms because there were more farms down South, even more were needed when the cotton gin was created. The cotton gin helped take out the seeds from the cotton faster so more cotton could be produced.

Slaves in America were treated very poorly by plantation owners and regular people. The slaves could not go to school or attend church, if they got married it was until separation or death. They were treated as property not as real people because that is how people saw them because they could buy them. If the slaves were caught running away they would be wiped in front of all the other slaves to show what would happen if they tried to run away. That was the main way of punishment on most plantations.

It took until 1865 for slavery to be illegal in the United States with the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Things leading up to the civil War included many slaves running away. Some free slaves also got kidnapped back down into slavery. Lincolns view on slavery were that he would free all the slaves if he could and leave all the slaves if he could, he just wanted to stop the spreading of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation turned the Civil War into a war to end slavery because it freed all of the slaves in the rebellious states.

Plan to Improve Race Relations.

There are still racial tensions in America today because people still have prejudice thoughts. The police, for example, many police officers are more aggressive toward black people and less toward white people. There have been many cases of unnecessary violence between the police and black people like when the officers shoot unnecessary "warning shots". Some job offers have not let black people work for them. In schools it happens because of what white parents tell their kids about black people or if a teacher is racist. Racism still exists all over just because of silly assumptions.

The legacy of slavery has contributed to these racial tensions in many ways. It is difficult for our country to forget about our history because we did very bad things. Some Southerners still believe that slavery should be legal because of what they have been taught and because their ancestors fought for slavery. We started a war against ourselves because slavery was the base of the Southern economy and they would not give that up. All of the damage that America caused against itself and African Americans will not be forgotten because of how bad it was.

The one idea I have to improve race relations in America is to start a talk show. This talk show would talk about all of the issues going on with racism and things around this subject. I would invite guests on wrongly accused by police officers and officers that did the wrong thing. If we put them on the spot maybe things will change within the police force and more people with be taught the correct things. Black History month would be big because we could invite black celebrities to talk about our history and why things needs to change with our country. The talk show will work because it will talk about resent news regarding racism and have celebrities.
