What We Learned This Week
Reading- I can understand fluency. I can find a just right book. We have started out the school year setting up many procedures for our reader’s workshop time. We have discussed choosing just right books as well as using our classroom library. On Friday, we started talking about ways to use our Reader's Notebooks. We also worked very hard understanding reading fluency. We started setting our personal goals, and we practiced our fluency with our fluency partners.
Writing- I can use my Writer's Notebook to collect ideas for my writing. Our main topic this week was discussing how writer's get their ideas and what can inspire us as writers. We used songs, pictures and our own life to come up with ideas for our writing.
Math- We have been doing a lot of beginning of the year review of skills. We have discussed place value, tools we use for math, and data this week. Math home links also began coming home this week. They may not come home every night, but just look at your child’s assignment sheet to see what homework they may have that evening.
Spelling- We took our yearly pre-test this week. Scores for the pre-test will be in data binders next week.
Social Studies- I can be a responsible citizen of our classroom. We have had a great time learning about each other and how to be part of our classroom community. We have worked on our "I can" statements, written our class slogan, designed our class symbol, and discussed our core values. The kids want to create a song next, so be looking for that in the next few weeks.

PTA/Office News
This year, Target will give money to schools all over the country for one simple act: a vote. Our school needs just 25 votes to earn a $25 donation from Target. But that's only the beginning. For each additional vote, our school will get $1 more. So please remember that, although the gesture is small, the rewards are potentially huge. Go to GiveWith.Target.com to vote for Liberty Oaks Elementary School once a week through September 21 or until Target has given away all $5 million.
