The History of Hays State Prison

Hays State Prison is located in Trion, Georgia. The address of the prison is- 777 Underwood Drive Trion, Georgia. Hays State Prison is a part of the Georgia Department of Corrections. The prison opened in 1990, as an all males prison. Hays State Prison currently has 1,863 inmates.

It was known to the administrators, that the locks on all of the cells were not secure enough, but they did nothing to change that. Then, just as expected they didn't take action but the inmates immediately did, and that is when 3 men were all murdered in 1 week.

How it happened...

On December 26, 2012, Damion MacClain was strangled to death. It was at night, when several inmates broke the lock, and entered MacClain's cell. After, they broke in, they strangled him to death. It is believed that Damion MacClain was targeted, due to the fact that he resisted all gangs, while in prison. It was known by the administrators that the locks were untrustworthy, but they did nothing to fix that. Due to their lack of security, MacClain was the third person killed in 1 week at Hays State Prison.

Inmate Case Points

-Due to the fact the locks don't work properly, that is causing danger for the inmates, and the officers.

-It is know to the officers that the locks to cells have not worked in many years, but they have not done anything to change that.

-Damion was being threatened by many inmates, and his mother requested him to be moved to a place with better security, but they never moved his location.

-Even after many beatings and stabbings, they still would not change the locks; it took 3 deaths in 1 week for them to finally increase security at the prison.

Court's Ruling...

Instead of taking this case to court, Georgia ended up paying the MacClain family $350,000, to have them drop the lawsuit against Hays State Prison.
