ENSEMBLE UPDATES
JANFEST IS THIS WEEKEND!
We are thrilled to be sending FIVE talented musicians to the 70th Annual University of Georgia January High School Band Fest. Typical festival attendance is approximately 1000 students from 130 schools. Here’s a link to the event if you’d like to learn more.
Congratulations to the following students who were selected to attend this special event!
1. Kate Gonda
2. Steven Gould
3. Justin Kamina
4. Augustus McPherson
5. Will Nicholson
DISTRICT HONORS BAND / ALL STATE
We are SO PROUD to tell you that our very own freshman, Will Nicolson (Bass Clarinet) has made it to ALL STATE! And Justin Kamina (Junior/Bass Clarinet) has been selected as a SECOND ALTERNATE. (There are only two slots and two alternates chosen for this instrument!) Also, huge congratulations are in order to our District Honors Band musicians:
Will Nicolson, Justin Kamina and Will Foster!
Thank you, parents, for supporting all of the musicians who auditioned for these parts.
LGPE IS MARCH 10-12
In March, the three classroom bands participate in an event called Large Group Performance Evaluations (LGPE). What is LGPE? It is the equivalent of an end of course test in other subject areas (except that it happens mid-semester!) This year's event takes place from March 10-12 at Centennial High School.
- We prepare our groups to play three selections: 1) a march or chorale style piece of our choosing 2) Two selections from a GMEA approved list of works designated by difficulty level.
- A panel of three judges evaluate our performance based on tone quality, intonation, style and interpretation, etc. The judges are selected by our district music teachers and typically represent accomplished university and high school band programs from around the country.
- Following our stage performance, we are evaluated on the students’ ability to play a piece that they have never seen before (sight reading). We have 6 minutes to study and talk, then we perform. This aspect of the evaluation really shows the bands that are teaching techniques and fundamentals versus those in which a lot of "rote teaching" occurs.
- As we prepare for this annual evaluation, it is CRITICAL that students attend all rehearsals. During sectionals, we get into some very specific details in the music that we may not be able to teach as effectively during full band class. You can find the full rehearsal schedule on Charms: https://www.charmsoffice.com/charms/newcal.asp?month=1&year=2020
We also would love to see a packed house at our Pre-LGPE Concert February 11 here at Roswell High School. Mark your calendars now and show your support for the hard work that the students have done! Next week we will publish the LGPE schedules for each class and volunteer sign-ups. We’ll need two chaperones for each concert at Centennial HS (total of six parents). We also need photographers. Thank you!

BAND BOOSTER UPDATES
OPEN POSITIONS
We still have an opening on our Board for 2020. Choosing to serve on a nonprofit board of directors enables you to become an integral part of solving problems in our band, our school and our community. It’s a great opportunity to serve in a leadership position in an organization that means so much to the city of Roswell. Contact president@roswellband.com with any questions you may have.
VP, Ways & Means (1 VP, or 2 people can serve as Co-VP’s)
The Vice President(s) of Ways & Means will research and evaluate fundraisers to make recommendations to the Executive Board for opportunities to raise capital. He/she will oversee all fundraising activities & committees, assist with budget planning and will ensure the required school documentation is submitted on time.
Other Volunteer Opportunities:
Assistant Treasurer (1 person)
Working with the Treasurer, receive and record all monies and deposit in an account established by the Association or the Band.
Band Banquet Committee Members
We are looking for parents to join our committee to start planning the 2019/2020 band banquet held in May. The first meeting will be in February. If interested, please email Christina Knutson christinaabq@gmail.com.
M.A.R.C.H. COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER
M.A.R.C.H. stands for “Musicians Acting with Responsibility, Compassion, and Hard work.” For a quick overview, check out this video from our inaugural launch back in 2018:
We have plans to launch this month! Stay tuned for further details. And we are in need of FIVE volunteers to serve on our MARCH fundraiser committee. This is one of our most meaningful band fundraisers, and you can help make it a treasured experience for our students in 2020. Students request pledges, then spend an entire day working in our Roswell community. The students commit to an 8-hour day of service day on Saturday, March 7, 2020. It’s hard work, but they have a great time!
We need help securing work sites, seeking donations for student incentives and organizing students for each site. We will meet a few times, but most of the work will be done on your own time via email. It’s a great opportunity to get involved with the band and meet some great people! Contact Gretchen Shirley (gmarie869@gmail.com) or Anne Marie Canty (anniecanty@yahoo.com) if you are interested in learning more.
Is your employer interested in being a Corporate Match Sponsor? We are looking for corporate sponsors who can provide a $1 to $1 match. In exchange, the sponsors will be mentioned and featured in our communications (which assists in increasing in their branding and awareness). Reach out to president@roswellband.com for details.
JEEP TEAM CONTEST WINNER CELEBRATION
The Schnitzels, led by Captain Augustus McPherson won the Student Team Contest. This team needs to SAVE THE DATE! On Friday, February 7th @ 6:00 p.m. we will be hosting a party for the winning team at Main Event.
We will send out personalized invitations to the students next week. It’s important that they RSVP so that we can plan accordingly for activities and food. Thank you!
