A Message from Principal Hale
November 19, 2021
Teaching kindness and gratitude continued this week. We are finding that besides some gaps in academics after the inconsistencies of in-person learning last year, we also have many social and emotional skills gaps. We believe that teaching our core values (Toro Targets) of Respect, Responsibility, Courage, Compassion, and Integrity are more important than ever before. These skills must be taught explicitly, just like skills in math or reading. We take this challenge head-on and appreciate your support at home in reinforcing kindness and our Toro Targets.
Thanks to some funding from the Federal Government and the state, we will be setting up a tutoring/work support program for targeted students next quarter. Students who are targeted for this additional help will receive an invitation to participate in our before-school support program. Stay tuned for more information.
Finally, we continue to enforce our mitigation strategies. Please remember we are not completely out of this pandemic. If your child exhibits any symptoms at all, please keep him or her home and get tested. Students with symptoms should not return to school while waiting for results. Thank you for all of your cooperation with this. It takes all of us.
Remember, there is no school on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday next week as we observe the Thanksgiving holiday.
Writing Goals Continue Each Week
Revising Writing is Often the Hardest Part of the Whole Process
Next week (and the week after Thanksgiving) we will focus on revising writing. Revising can be very challenging for students. Revision is not just correcting spelling and punctuation errors in writing, instead, revision requires analyzing the writing and looking for possible changes to word choice, sentence length and structure, and elaborating on details. Research shows us students who are able to look at their own writing and make revisions, are better writers and communicators.
