COMMUNITY OF SCHOOLS
Welcome Alberto Carvalho, LAUSD new Superintendent
We warmly welcome Mr. Carvalho as he started his first day as he took on the LAUSD Superintendent role officially on Monday, February 14. He arrived in Los Angeles with a sense of energy and purpose, focused on elevating every single student in the District to their full academic potential and unifying the Los Angeles community through the power of education. Starting from his first day, Mr. Carvalho jumped into his new role by visiting schools, engaging with the students in classrooms, speaking with parents, and getting involved throughout all of our communities. Camp Day 2022 at PRCS
Unfortunately, this year's Pali Camp for the 5th grade class at Porter Ranch Community School had to be canceled but PRCS didn't let that stop their PTA from bringing Pali Camp to their campus by creating Camp PRCS. With the support of teachers and a whole lot of volunteers, the PTA created stations of activities that the students would have participated in if they had gone to Pali Camp. From making dream catchers to bead name tags to dissecting owl pellets and running a full obstacle course, students also enjoyed smores to go and camp food for lunch. They participated in team-building activities and games. Great job to PRCS for creating an on-campus experience for students so they don't miss out on the fun of Pali Camp.

Get Lit! Poetry in motion
Title III Coaches have been in our middle schools supporting the implementation of the Get-Lit program. They have been working in classrooms assisting teachers with strategies that support our English Language Learners' listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through the process of learning and writing poetry, these students have tapped into their talents!
A culmination "Poetry Slam" will be shared with parents at the end of the semester at each school. Contact Juliane Prager: firstname.lastname@example.org or John Terrien: email@example.com for additional information.
Our Title III Coaches have been very busy this past month! They have been laser-focused on supporting all schools and students in preparation for the English Learner Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) that all our English Learners will take beginning this month. They have visited countless schools and provided support to EL Designees, administrators, teachers, and most importantly, students. They have met with staff to conduct professional development, share best practices and lesson plans. They have modeled lessons for teachers and have worked directly with students. They are happy to report that the students are doing great!
As always, if you have a need regarding support for your English Language Learners please reach out to our amazing Title III coaches who are eager to help support your students.

Turn your clocks ahead on March 13
March 13 is Daylight Savings!
In the United States, daylight saving time lasts for a total of 34 weeks, running from early-to-mid March to the beginning of November in those states that observe it.
In 2022, daylight saving time will start on March 13, more than a full week before the official start of spring. Daylight saving time will end on Nov. 6.
Under the conditions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November, representing an extension from previous years.

Masks outdoor optional now!
Starting February 22, LAUSD has updated their masking protocol for all students at school. Masking will still be required at all times indoors and outdoor masking will now be optional. Students were given the choice to wear masks when outdoors, many of which did but some TK and Kindergarten students at Beckford Charter Elementary took advantage of this new rule at recess playing without masks on. It was great to see the smiling faces in full!
