Student Spotlight - meet Dayton and Coryn!
JFK has just discovered its own musical gems. Dayton Goegebuer and Coryn Cahill are two parts of a band called, “Original Riot.” Meeting at Rockstars of Tomorrow here in Norco, Dayton and Coryn along with two other band members began making music together. Over the past six years , they have honed in their skills as a guitarist and singer which has led to many amazing gigs. Their talents have paved the way for opening shows for artists like LA Guns and Oingo Boingo and playing in popular venues like the House of Blues and the Whiskey a GoGo. Their journey continues April 19-21 at the Coachella Music Festival where they will open for “Dead Sarah” at Vestal Village. In the meantime, Dayton and Coryn are working with the other band mates in getting their EP album ready which will be available on any music platform. Check out Original Riots Facebook page, @theorigionalriot, for schedules, venues, and album updates! We here at JFK are excited for Dayton and Coryn and look forward to watching these gems shine.

California Dashboard
California recently launched the 2018 California School Dashboard website designed to help communities across the state access important data about K–12 districts and schools.
The site features a wealth of information on test scores, graduation rates, school attendance, college/career readiness and suspensions. The Dashboard is part of California’s new school accountability and support framework that is empowering local communities to address the needs of their local schools.
We are taking this opportunity to utilize the new CA School Dashboard ensure that we are always moving forward, because CNUSD is #ExcellenceDriven!
Our District continues to lead the county and the state in academic rigor, social & emotional support, and college & career readiness.

Why a new system and a new tool?
California’s future success depends on tapping into the potential of all students, so they graduate ready for college, career and life. For schools to reach this goal, teachers, parents and the community need clear and useful measures of progress. As an accountability tool, the Dashboard will help the state and local communities identify strengths and challenges and create improvement plans.
What’s different?
In the past, accountability systems for districts and schools relied solely on test scores. But one test taken on one particular day doesn’t provide a complete picture of all the ways schools are helping students succeed.
Think of it this way: You can’t drive a car by only watching the speedometer. You also keep your eye on the road, check the mirrors, monitor the gas tank and pay attention if the engine light comes on. Similarly, the Dashboard provides information on the many aspects of student performance, which will give a more complete picture of a school’s progress. The Dashboard also reports on how schools are making progress over time.
What’s next?
Districts eligible for assistance are connected with local support and more specialized help through the State System of Support, which includes experts at agencies across California.
Local communities can get involved in continuous improvement by participating in the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) process. The LCAP is your school district’s blueprint for setting goals, reviewing data and aligning resources to support for struggling students.
These exciting changes taking place in education will take time to fully implement. While schools are making progress in many key areas there is always more work to do. The Dashboard is part of an ongoing conversation with our community on both how we’re doing and how we can do better. Meeting goals will take a united effort, and we will continue working with our families to ensure success for every student.
We are Excellence Driven here at CNUSD, and we are always moving forward.

1st Annual Norco College Origami Fest
As many of you know, the NCRC hosted a friendly competition this week called Origami Fest. The idea for Origami Fest came out of a desire to have the NCRC be more of a lively and welcoming place for students. The NCRC has never hosted an event for the purpose of having some plain, simple fun. The hope was to have some participation, but we had more than plain, simple participation. Origami Fest became a way for students to put their own mark on the NCRC. It was a full on competition between freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. But the true competition was between freshman and juniors— when they saw they couldn’t win, sophomores collaborated with juniors against the freshmen. The freshmen held their own though. The winner has yet to be announced, but in the meantime, take a look at these pictures of their work. Needless to say, the NCRC has been transformed.
