Back to School Letter from Mr. Dougherty
Dear Saint Catharine School Community,
I hope this letter finds you well rested and enjoying the summer season. I trust that you are enjoying the days away from your routine school schedule, finding time to get to the beach, exploring new sights, and making lasting memories with your family.
This year we are excited to welcome two sections of both Prek-4 and Kindergarten students to our school. We would like to thank our families for their continued positive referrals and support of our school, directly benefiting the growth of our enrollment. Students, as always we ask you to continue to be a positive example for our younger students and model kindness, respect, and best effort in all that you do, each day at Saint Catharine School.
We are excited to implement new reading and math programs for Kindergarten through grade 5 students, strengthening the educational foundation of our school and providing high quality resources for our dedicated teaching staff. Our middle school will also benefit from new math resources, as well as a new Project Lead the Way learning module, Flight and Space, as we continue to enrich our students with exciting STEM learning experiences at SCS.
As we begin to prepare for September, I hope that all members of our school community will join us for the “Blessing of the Backpacks”, a special welcome back Mass and picnic on our school recess field on Saturday, September 15th, at 4:30 PM. Msgr. Cullen will provide a special blessing for the start of school, as we look forward to all of the positive events that await us in the 2018-2019 school year.
In closing, on behalf of the faculty and staff of Saint Catharine School, we hope that you enjoy the remaining days of your summer vacation. We look forward to welcoming you back to school and we wish our recent graduates a positive start to their high school experience.
Yours in faith and education,
Mr. Dougherty

Monica Mackin-Markowski
Monica Mackin Markowski, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away on August 3rd, 2018 at UPENN Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, with her family by her side. She is survived by her husband, Tom Markowski and her two sons, Matthew and Michael, as well as her loving sister Marybeth Mackin. She was pre-deceased by her mother, Elizabeth and her father, Vincent, and her brother, Joseph Mackin.
Monica was born and raised in Bayonne, NJ, where she attended Holy Family Academy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Marketing from St. Peters University in Jersey City, where she was also enrolled in ROTC. Monica spent her 20 year professional career in retail management where she worked as the Operations Manager for the Bonwit Teller Department store in the Short Hills Mall. Monica later became Store Manager for Mark Cross, Christolfe and other luxury retailers, all located in the Short Hills Mall, a place where she loved going to work each day, so much.
Monica left her business career in 2004, to become a full time mother to her sons, Matthew and Michael Markowski. Both Matthew and Michael meant everything to Monica, and we know, she will be watching over them forever. Her boys are very appreciative, for those who always asked them about their mother, and who offered their help.
Monica was an avid runner for most of her adult life and completed the New York City Marathon and many other 10k road races throughout New Jersey. Most mornings, Monica could be seen running on the ocean boardwalk, from Spring Lake to Asbury Park and back, rain or shine.
Monica loved Broadway Theatre, Bayonne, the Spring Lake South End beach and fashion.
Monica was also a dedicated family caretaker for her mother, father, aunts, uncles, and her favorite cousin Scoopy, who all depended on her, and loved her so very much.
Monica was a special person who touched many people's lives in a positive way. She cared for others deeply, especially those in need. Her acts of kindness and generosity towards friends and strangers were an inspiration for those who knew her.
Monica was a woman of deep faith and a parishioner of both St Henry's Parish in Bayonne and St Catherine's in Spring Lake, NJ. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Monica will be remembered for her compassion, empathy and kindness.
Monica's family is so grateful for the exceptional care she received while at UPENN Medical Center in Philadelphia. A donation in her memory, is something that would have touched her heart.
