Colt Round Up
October 7, 2018
"Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending." - Carl Bard
With Appreciation:
- Hats off to our 5th grade team for their work on the AVID initiative - they are dedicating one PLC meeting a week to revisiting their goals and progress monitoring and they volunteered to lead part of our recent Staff meeting. This week they have a site visit and will be observed by the regional AVID coordinator. You've got this!
- Bravo to Sarah and Karla for their efforts to get our PBIS Tier II/Intervention team off to a great start by doing tons of iReady data entry into our team's intervention spreadsheet! Thank you!
- Kudos to Pam, our office team and our teachers for getting 100% of our Emergency Cards in. Word on the street is that we are the first site at 100%! Way to go!
- Hooray for our 2nd grade team - they launched our first round of collab days and dug into their iReady Reading Data - phonics instruction/intervention was the big a-ha take away!
PBIS Update
Celebrating our ZERO REFERRAL KIDDOS -
- 5th grade is planning a whole grade root beer float social for November.
- 3rd grade is planning an enrichment block in teacher's classrooms - I heard about origami, art, and rubix cubes - fun!
- What is everyone else planning? Keep Jen/Kristen posted so we can work with the 1+ kiddos
The chart below compares our referrals from all of last year to this year. The numbers are clearly skewed - we are only 1/3 of the way into the years, but I though the %s were compelling!
Lockout Info - this went out to families; it's an FYI for staff
- WHY? a "Lockout" would be called if there was a need to keep students and staff inside, but there was not an immediate threat to student safety. Examples might be an animal that is loose on campus (it's happened!), or police activity in the area but not in proximity to LCES.
- WHAT DO STAFF DO? we secure our campus (lock all doors and gates) so that no one can get in. Staff take role and our office team verifies that all students are accounted for. Staff continue teaching activities.
- WHAT DO STUDENTS DO? staff will move students to their classroom or other space (i.e. MPR) and class activities continue on as normal.
- WHAT ABOUT RESTROOM USE? it depends; if the threat is significant and doesn't diminish, we may not allow students to leave to use the restroom (although all rooms have an emergency restroom bucket available to use if needed); if the threat isn't local, facilitated restroom use might be allowed - we would rely on the input from the district & local law enforcement to make a decision on restroom use.
- WOULD PARENTS BE INFORMED? yes, although you may not be informed after the fact (i.e. if it was a wild animal); information would come to you via a School Messenger email (like this newsletter); we may also communicate via our website, our school app and/or a phone message; if the situation was urgent, we'd be sure to be in touch with families as soon as we can ensure the kids are safe.
- CAN I CHECK OUT MY CHILD DURING A LOCKOUT? probably not (depends on the threat), but you can as soon as the threat has subsided.
For more information, check out this informational flier - focus on the section with the blue circle w/ 2 hands. If you have any questions, please contact Jen Hladun at jhladun@wpusd.org or Kristen Beck at kbeck@wpusd.org.
Deserving Families - Kiwanis Club Shopping Spree
- The Kiwanis Club of Lincoln will once again host some of our City's most deserving students this Christmas by giving them a shopping spree on December 8th!
- Looking for the names of 5 LCES students who would benefit from this service
- Email Jen with any names by October 12
Halloween Door Decorating
- all doors will be judged on 10/24 at 9:30 am; there will be one winner per grade level
- This project is one that your art docents have been asked to take the lead on. So, your art docent will work with your class to coordinate your door (unless you prefer to do it on your own with your students).
- Our goal is to have a "red ribbon week" theme - please chat with your docent about how to do that appropriately. For TK-2, our focus is on healthy choices; and grades 3-5 will be focused on being drug free (but no specific drug references) - here are some ideas for inspiration!
- Click here for a flier with more details about the decorating contest.
- Contact Krystal at kricci1084@gmail.com or talk with your Art Docent with any questions
- we are asking staff to move the door decorations to the MPR between 10/4 and 10/26 to be used for Carnival decorations - stay tuned for details
