Field Hockey in the Olympics

How it Began: 1908

Field hockey was first played in the 1908 Summer Games in London. It was a men’s game and there were only 6 teams participating.

Moving Forward: 1924-1928, 1980


  • Field hockey was removed from the 1924 Summer Games in Paris, because there was a lack of an international structure.


  • The International Hockey Federation was formed later that year and men's field hockey was a part of the 1928 games in Amsterdam.
  • The first women’s field hockey games were held at the 1980 games in Moscow.

Today: 2012-2016

  • At the 2012 games in London, there were 12 men’s teams and 12 women's teams competing.

  • Germany won the men’s games and the Netherlands won the women’s games.

  • At the 2016 games in Brazil, there will also be 24 total teams participating.
