Volume 1, Issue 11 - October 27, 2017
As we continue to work toward improving our students' reading skills, we want to ask you to promote reading time at home. Reading for pleasure has in impact on breadth of vocabulary, reading and writing ability, and self confidence as a reader. The ability to read competently and, more importantly, the enjoyment of reading has implications for a student’s academic success. It's also an important indicator of success in other areas of life. Students who love to read have:
- higher scores on the cognitive and social/attitudinal competencies
- consistently higher scores in mathematics, reading, logical problem-solving and attitude
- higher average scores for engagement in school, positive communication and relations with family, and positive friendships
- show less risky behavior
- higher levels of motivation towards school.
Students are always welcome to Gentry's library to find high-interest reading material!

From the Nurse
Middle school and high school students are allowed to carry ONE day’s dose of over the counter medicine with them to school. This generally is one tablet of medicine. It must be in the original container, with the label on it.
With cold/flu season upon us, this is just a reminder of the CPS policy and includes medicine such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, cold medicine, throat lozenges, cough drops.

PTSA Krispy Kreme Fundraiser
On Thursday you received the following info by email. Here is a reminder! There are still open spots to volunteer!! See attachment for order form if you need another one!
On Monday morning, the students and faculty at GMS were greeted in their advisory classrooms with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. This was our way of kicking off this year's PTSA fundraiser. Each student received a packet including an informational sheet and a pre-sales order form. We are asking all students to try and sell 3 boxes. If your family wishes to participate but is not interested in purchasing any doughnuts, prizes will also be offered for donations. We have attached the informational sheet that should have come home with your student outlining all of the specifics. The order forms and money matching the forms MUST be returned no later than Friday, November 3rd. These doughnuts will be delivered fresh to GMS on Saturday, November 11th. Pick up time is from 8:30am-11am. If your doughnuts are not picked up on 11/11 by 11am, they will be re-sold or donated, so please be sure and make arrangements to have all orders picked up by 11am. Orders can either be picked up by the seller and then delivered by you, or you can suggest to all customers that they pick up their own orders.
We are planning to have student and parent volunteers available for easy pick up. If you are interested in assisting with this during the morning of November 11th, please see the attached sign up.

Jaguar Rumble Thank You
Our recent Jaguar Rumble charity event was a HUGE success! This event, which pitted students on all three fall sports teams against each other in a volleyball match, brought in more than $1,300 to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
