Math Workshop
Mathematicians have worked hard with fractions and mixed numbers! They have made connections, regrouped and have been flexible with their numbers. We will begin multiplying fractions. This is the last mini unit within the large “Operations with Fractions Unit 5”.
Talking Points in Math:
Who was the Heartbreak Hitman in the Valentine mystery?
How do you change an improper fraction into a mixed number?
How do you solve 7 ⅖ - 4 ⅘ ?
Reading & Language Workshop
Readers have now completed Unit 4: Investigation. An assessment of their learning was given on Monday that was a reflection of the essential question: How do you solve a mystery? Students used mysteries that we read in language workshop to support their responses with text evidence while using mystery vocabulary. It’s hard to believe, but we are now into Unit 5! Unit 5 is titled “Inquiry” and students will be exploring books that will support our essential question, “How does inquiry lead to action?” We are beginning this week with a book about Thomas Edison.
Writing Workshop
Writers just completed Unit 4, Realistic Fiction Stories. It is so fun to hear their writer’s voice come out in their writing! Lessons for this unit were on planning, drafting, editing, and revising stories. It’s amazing to see a story mountain organizer develop into a story that includes developed characters and setting, a interesting plot that includes a climax, and a well thought out ending! Students also learned the craft of creating paragraphs and adding dialogue! We are now moving into Unit 5, with a focus on how infographics can give us information in a different way! We are excited to pair our writing with science for this unit!
Talking Points for ELA
What was your favorite mystery book that we read in the Investigation unit?
What was your realistic fiction story about?
What do you think inquiry means? How can it lead to action?
Science
We have been working on our Energy unit. Students have been
constructing an explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object
making observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.
asking questions and predicting outcomes about the changes in energy that occur when objects collide.
applying scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.
learning about waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move.
describing that light reflecting from objects and entering the eye allows objects to be seen
