Lil Steamer Families --
Thank you to each of you in #SteamerNation who we honor on Veterans Day. Thank you for your time, bravery and sacrifice for our country. I am forever grateful for your service to maintain America's freedom and for the example you set for our Lil Steamers.
On Monday, we held a short assembly for our students in which the FES choir sang the Star Spangled Banner and We Will Remember. Students also learned more details about each military branch and we recognized veterans who were honored by FES students.
In addition, one of my favorite traditions on Veterans Day is taking my favorite veteran, my father Gerald Hoese, out for dinner. I don't think he's caught on that I alway choose a location where veterans eat for free :)
Happy Veterans Day!

This week on Mindful Monday students were encouraged to take deep breaths and count to 10 slowly in their heads when they are upset. They were also encouraged to engage in a favorite hobby to help themselves calm down when they are feeling upset.
Literacy Corner
Kindergarten – 2nd: Phonemic Awareness
What it is: Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear sounds and manipulate them within words. It’s important for students to have phonemic awareness skills. Students with a solid foundation in phonemic awareness become strong readers and writers. Some examples of these skills would be, being able to isolate the sounds in a word, identify beginning sounds, ending sounds, and medial sounds. Example: With your child say the word “CAT”, now tell your child you’re going to change the beginning sound to /M/. “What word do I have now?” “MAT”
Ways you can help:
- Play rhyming games
- Read rhyming books and Nursery Rhymes
- Practice rhyming skills by finding rhyming words throughout your normal day
- Blend sounds together to make words
3rd – 5th: Fluency Strategies
What it is: Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. In order to understand what you read; you must be able to read fluently. When reading aloud, your child should be reading in phrases rather than word for word and adding intonation (fluctuation in the voice) where appropriate. Their reading should be smooth and have expression.
Ways you can help:
- Choral read: both you and your child read together, modeling fluent reading, using voices and correct phrasing.
- Echo read: You read a sentence, modeling fluent reading and your child copies you exactly as you have read it. It’s always fun to read in funny voices!
- You Read, I Read books: These books are full of well-known stories where the child and the adult take turn reading certain parts and then reading together.
- Read easy books! The best way to practice fluency is to encourage your reader to read easy books that they know well and practice phrasing, speed, accuracy and expression.
