WEEK OF JANUARY 27-31, 2020
DALLAS ISD SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES
JANUARY IS SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH!
Dallas ISD is joining 1,025 school districts throughout Texas to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month. This is a great time to focus on the crucial role an elected board of trustees plays in our communities and schools. Plan now to show your school board members you appreciate their dedication and hard work. They are extraordinary people who voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing the schools in our district. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children daily. This year’s theme for School Board Recognition Month is “Launching the Next Generation.”
Overall, school boards are charged with establishing a vision for a district’s education program, designing a structure to achieve that vision, ensuring that schools are accountable to the community, and advocating for continuous improvement in student achievement.
Recognizing board members for this commitment and sacrifice takes a combined effort on the part of all those they serve: administrators, school staff, students, and the community. Although showing appreciation should be a year-round process, taking advantage of the designated School Board Recognition Month in January, assures that these important people receive some of the thanks they deserve. Join in by using the hashtag #SchoolBoardMonth on social media.
The trustees are:
- President, Justin Henry, District 9 (South Dallas and parts of Downtown Dallas, Pleasant Grove, Deep Ellum, Uptown, and East Dallas)
- 1st Vice President, Dan Micciche, District 3 (Northeast Dallas)
- 2nd Vice President, Edwin Flores, District 1 (Northwest Dallas)
- Secretary, Karla Garcia, District 4 (Southeast Dallas, Seagoville and Balch Springs)

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP/NORTHWEST GOALS & CORE VALUES
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Illustrious Leaders,
This upcoming week will mark the week of 4th week of the 4th Six Weeks. Can you believe we are a few short weeks away from our 4th common assessment examination? Common Assessments will again give us invaluable data to make critical decisions for the remainder of the school year. Decisions and implementation are paramount at this time.
Think about the remaining days we have until STAAR testing. Make sure each day is filled with engaging, data-driven, differentiated, rigorous, and powerful instruction. Our students deserve it!
Next week, Mr. Burak will be hosting our “Just 1 more” campaign for our campuses next week. We are excited to see the growth in our administrators and our teachers knowing and owning their data. How many students are out of place? What group do they belong to? How many questions away are they from their growth target? How are you monitoring this data? What is your system? How will you implement these changes quickly? These questions and many more will be embedded in the PD alongside using our data to inform these decisions.
What is the importance of fostering 'Grit' regarding our scholars? 'Grit' is defined as the fortitude and determination (strength of mind that enables one to endure adversity with courage). As we are preparing for the upcoming STAAR examinations, think about how our scholars must show academic achievement and growth. Have we as educators fully prepared ALL of our scholars to read, write and problem solve? Have we fully prepared them to be successful in school? Have we prepared ALL scholars for the real world? In order to accomplish this, we must ensure that we not ONLY have Grit but that we TEACH 'GRIT'!
Educators need grit which means to do whatever it takes to turn education around, and that starts with hard work and our own modern version of true grit. Teaching it and living it should be in the front and center in all our education conversations. We MUST ensure that we help ALL scholars build the skills they need to succeed in school and in life. Do you have grit? Does our campus staff have grit? If not, what will you as the campus leader do to teach grit?
As always, I look forward to seeing academic changes in your instructional programs to ensure our scholars are being successful.
Have an awesome week LEADING, COACHING, TEACHING, LEARNING AND MAKING ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENTS!
As always...."WE ARE IN IT TO WIN IT...GO FOR THE GOLD!!

BILITERACY CAMP
The Bilingual ESL Department is excited to pilot Biliteracy Camp - an innovative feeder pattern tutoring program targeted at struggling English learners in grades 3 – 5. We will meet for four (4) intensive sessions in which students will experience hands-on, engaging activities and lessons to promote listening, speaking, reading, writing, and metalinguistic connections for TELPAS. All expenses and logistics, including the selection and confirmation of host campuses, have been provided for by the Bilingual ESL Department. Transportation will be available from home campus to host campus.
One thing we do need from individual campuses is assistance with reaching out to identified students and facilitating (online) registration. We ask that you identify a campus contact person to assist with parent communication and student registration by Thursday, December 19, 2019.

THE CORE 4
Dallas ISD is 20,000 staff members strong, and each one is vital to the work being accomplished in the district. Through the district’s commitment to exemplary customer service, each member is focused on serving 157,000 students and their families by delivering professional, high-quality service in everything we do.
At the heart of great customer service for each district employee are the four tenets of customer service--the Core 4: focused, fast, flexible, and friendly. These principles, also, are key to forging a positive culture within the organization as they are applied, internally, colleague to colleague, as well as to students, families, taxpayers, and the entire community.
It is a strong commitment that goes beyond the conversation about what exemplary customer service looks like becoming the norm for the way we operate in the district every day.
