The Red Wolf is also known as Canis rufus. The Red Wolf was last found in coastal prairie and marsh habitats but was also found in the Raleigh area of North Carolina. It is endangered because of intensive predator control programs and habitat loss. After it was declared an endangered species in 1973 efforts to located and capture them were started. Then they started a captive breeding program. By 1987 enough wolves were bred to start a restoration program on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Since then more restoration programs were started in other locations and that is where we are currently at today.
