Secondary ELAR Updates on the Hays CISD Content Resource Site
The secondary ELAR Priority Performance Assessments (PPAs) have been adjusted on the Hays CISD content resource site for the late fall and early spring. Adjustments were made to the PPAs for 7th, 9th, and 10th grade in order to facilitate conversations around instructional practices and scoring for STAAR essays and short answer responses. Please see the Hays CISD content site for more information about which PPAs teachers will bring to the essay and short answer response protocol, calibration, and scoring PD in the early spring.
Upcoming Middle School Revising and Editing PD
6th, 7th, and 8th Grade ELAR Jeff Anderson's Authentic Revising and Editing PD
Who: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ELAR teachers, co-teachers, and instructional coaches
What: Participants will partake in weaving grammar and mechanics instruction into the context of writing in meaningful, interactive, and fun ways, as well as, experience dynamic methods to integrate and expand the definition of editing in writing process classrooms- everyday.
When and Where: January 4, 2017 in Chapa Middle School's Cafeteria, 8:30-3:30

Upcoming Middle School STAAR Composition PD
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is providing professional development related to the genre of STAAR essay writing for all 7th grade ELAR teachers in January 2017. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction will pay for subs., but teachers will need to register for the training in Eduphoria and put their absence is Smartfind Express.
7th Grade ELAR Expository Essay Protocol, Calibration, and Scoring PD
Who: 7th grade ELAR teachers, co-teachers, and instructional coaches
What: Participants will experience a demonstration of expository writing strategies, as well as, re-calibrate then score expository essays and will plan implementation of strategies based on current trend from expository essays. Please plan accordingly because teachers will need to bring the assigned Priority Performance Assessments to be scored at the training.
When and Where: January 18, 2017 in C&I's Blue Training Room, 8:30-3:30

Upcoming Central Texas Writing Project (CTWP) Spring Follow Up PD
Who: Summer 2016 cohort participants (middle school and high school ELAR teachers)
What: The focus of this 1 day follow up in the CTWP professional development series will be implementing a writing workshop model with an emphasis on integrating writing into the daily work of the classroom, creating a community of writers in both face to face and digital learning spaces, prewriting, drafting, conferencing, revising/editing, and authentic publishing. Critical lenses of differentiation in writing instruction will serve as a special theme integrated throughout the development series, providing a valuable opportunity for participants to reflect on their craft and refine their practices as they pertain to the unique learners that fill their classrooms throughout the school year.When and Where: February 16, 2017 in C&I's Large Training Room, 8:30-3:30

Updated 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Reading STAAR Documents
-Beginning with assessments administered in spring 2017, the TEA is decreasing the number of test questions on the STAAR grades 3-8 assessments based on the requirements in House Bill 743.
-In comparison to the 2015 tests, the STAAR grades 4-8 reading tests have been shortened by 8 questions each.

Inference Literacy Workstation
Students will rotate through various literacy work stations, for practice without penalty, focused on the skills of inferring, making connections, and vocabulary development after teachers have taught mini-lessons on each concept,
Central Texas Writing Project Lego Scaffolds for Analysis
Teachers worked independently to build Lego creations that focused on a visual interpretation of symbolism or theme from a mentor text. Next, teachers followed up with collaborative conversations justifying their Lego creations before they wrote an analysis paragraph.
Manipulative Unit Organizer
