ANNAPOLIS TRIP
We had an awesome time on our field trip to Annapolis last Wednesday. The weather was perfect! The tour guides were informative and kept the students engaged during the entire walking tour of historical places around Annapolis, inside the State House, and throughout the yard of the Naval Academy. Some lucky groups were able to see the midshipmen during Noon Formation. See video below.
We'd like to thank all chaperones who both drove and met us down there as well as those who rode the bus. Without all of you, the trip would not be possible. We appreciate you taking time from your day to join us and help keep us safe.
Academic Infomation
Math
We have completed our 3rd Quarter Assessment. We set goals in class of things they still need to work on. Please ask your child what math concepts they still need to work on such as understanding line plots or subtracting mixed numbers.
We are beginning Unit 9 which is revisiting many concepts taught earlier in the year.
- Students will multiply a fraction by a whole number.
- Students will solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
- Students will use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters and locate it on a number line.
- Students will compare decimals and write in decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100.
- Student will use all four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money.
- Students will make a line plot to display a set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) and solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions using information presented in line plots. (4.MD.B.4)
Math Facts
Has your child shown mastery of any math facts yet? How many levels has your child completed? Has (s)he earned the addition or subtraction triangle for the class quilt?
Get those math facts moving- make flash cards, download an app, play a math fact car game - students who know their math facts can concentrate more on math concepts and problem solving. Make a goal and work toward achieving that goal regarding math facts.
Language Arts
We are continuing to read informational text in order to respond to questions. Some objectives we will be focusing on are:
Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.
Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.
Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text.
Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
Identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points.
We will be going back to literature (short stories, poems, plays)
In order to summarize short stories, students have been using the following summarizing organizer:Somebody (the main character)
Wanted (the character's goal or wants)
But (the challenge that gets in the way)
So (the character's action to overcome the challenge)
Then (the results of the action)
Parents: You can help improve your child's comprehension by having a conversation about the independent book your child is reading each night for homework.
Reading assessments have been completed for each student to demonstrate the growth they have made thus far.
Social Studies
Newsela
Give it a try - it's a great way to maintain their reading strategies when they are home sick or on a snow day/delay as well as the weekend.
Ten Marks / Common Core
Has your child accessed his/her account lately?
This is another great way to maintain your child's math skills when home sick or on a snow day/delay or the weekend.
Parents can also create a parent account in order to be able to see how their child is doing. Ask you child's teacher if you need more information regarding how to create the parent account.
CLASSROOM NEEDS
As you know flu and cold season is here and we are in NEED of TISSUES and DISINFECTANT WIPES.
All classrooms are in need of PENCILS.
All students should have earbuds or headphones for daily use in class. Also, these will be needed for state testing which is in the near future.
