GRE Family Gazette
October 22, 2018
Dear GRE Families,
Even though we had four days last week, they sure were busy! Thank you to all who were able to attend Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday. We have one more round of Fall conferences coming up on November 19th. If you have not met with your child's teacher, be sure to reach out to them to make sure you have a November conference time secured.
With the weather finally showing true Fall temperatures, please make sure you send your child with a jacket and possibly gloves and hats depending on the temp. We try to get our students outside every day and it's important they are prepared.
This week we will have our Fall Harvest parties. Please remember that food items being donated or brought in for this event need to be store bought with the label and nutritional content listed on the package. Additionally, we are a latex free environment so if you are helping to plan activities, keep that in mind too. We appreciate your help in keeping our students safe during this exciting event!
Here's to a great week full of fun, friends and learning!

A Few Important Reminders:
1. ATTENTION THIRD GRADE FAMILIES! On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, third graders will be taking the Ohio State Test in English Language Arts. Testing will begin at 9 am and will run for 90 minutes on both days. Please help our students be prepared by making sure they get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast.
2. Our school is in need of gently used clothes, especially in sizes 6-8. Now that the weather is getting cooler we need to reach out again to help fill this need. Leggings and sweatpants are particularly helpful!
3. Looking for a fun part time job? Big Walnut Schools Food Service Dept is looking for energetic and fun loving individuals to work in our Café’s. We are currently hiring a 2.5 hour position at General Rosecrans ES, and a 2.00 hour position at BW High School. We are also in need of Food Service Substitutes. Please apply on the District’s website at www.BWLS.net by going to the Food Service link.
This past week was National School Lunch Week! Students who had a sticker under their tray got to pick any treat they wanted from our cafeteria. Thank you to our amazing Miss Beth for her hard work in our kitchen! Congratulations to all our winners!
Specials Spotlight: Art with Mrs. Doran
Thank you to everyone who turned in their Art to Remember forms! It is not too late to order online if you still would like to pick some gifts for the holidays! We have been busy in art starting new projects…
Kindergarten half day students finished up their quarter of art this week! Their portfolio was sent home with them to see what they have been creating. Full day students just learned about the artist Piet Mondrian and how he likes to paint with the primary colors! Ask your kindergartner if they can tell you the 3 primary colors?
First grade students have been focusing on lines making shapes and shapes making pictures! They are creating their own shape robots and learning about printing with found objects. Ask your first grader what job they invented their robot to do?
Second graders just completed their secret code collages using geometric shapes. Students created their own keys, collaged with paper and had the chance to crack classmates code! Ask your student if they can tell you what geometric shapes they cut for their code?
Third graders finished up their Matisse collages where they focused on geometric vs, organic shapes. Students worked with a chosen color group and overlapped symmetrical shapes to create their collage. Ask your 3rd grader if they can tell you the difference between geometric and organic shapes?
Fourth graders are very excited to start their Passion Projects in art this week! Students have been introduced to many supply options and are beginning the planning and design process. Ask your student what passion they are going to choose for their project?
Art Room Wish List: Egg cartons, newspaper & FABRIC! Lots of students are interested in sewing, if you have any material you are looking to get rid of we will put it to good use!
