Fryelands Falcon Flyer
March 21, 2019
From the Principal
Dear Fryelands Families,
Kindergarten Registration continues
If you have incoming kindergarten students or know of neighbors who have incoming kindergarteners, please spread the word about fall kindergarten registration. Bring your child’s current immunization records and birth certificate for copying in order to register. Children must be 5 years old by August 31, 2019, to qualify for next fall’s kindergarten class.
Leadership at school and at home
This year we have talked with students about being leaders of their life and of their learning. You can use some of the following conversation starters to talk about leadership with your children.
Ask your child, “What is something special about you?”
Ask your child, “What is one habit you have that helps you?”
Ask your child, “How can you be a leader?”
Ask your child, “How will you contribute to a happy and an inspiring classroom?”
Ask your child, “What makes you feel good about who you are?”
Ask your child, “Which habit do you think is the most useful? Why?”
7 Habits of Highly Effective Students
The first three habits are personal victories with ourselves
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Things First
The next three habits are public victories with others
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize
The last habit is about strengthening our mind, body, and heart
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
I encourage you to have a conversation with your family about these ideas and see which ones you feel your family would benefit from trying out.
Thank you for bringing your students to school on time and prepared for learning each day.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at presleyj@monroe.wednet.edu or at
360-804-3400.
Sincerely,
Jeff Presley
Appropriate Clothing at School
Please keep in mind appropriate school attire for our warm spring days. To support a positive learning environment focusing on academics, please consider the following district and school dress code guidelines:
- Clothing which contains references to alcohol, drugs, inappropriate language, or is otherwise provocative or distracting to others, should not be worn to school.
- Shorts must be appropriate in length (end of fingertips when hands are at sides), and hemmed. Pants and shorts should adequately cover boxers or underwear.
- The upper body must be adequately covered. Avoid cut-off shirts, midriff-baring tops, revealing tank tops and tops with spaghetti straps.
- In addition, flip-flop sandals can be worn but students are unable to run, or play in the bark area for safety reasons.
Thank you for your support!
Procedures for Pick Up of Students or Changes in Dismissal Plans
- Only a parent (or guardian) is allowed to pick up a student from school, even if that person is an emergency contact, UNLESS a signed note is provided or a phone call is made to the office allowing it.
- The above procedure also applies to changes in a student's dismissal plan (only a parent or guardian can change a student's dismissal plan by note or phone call).
- An exception to the above procedure is if there is an emergency at school or if your student is in the health room and needs to leave school - if unable to reach a parent, health room staff will contact current local emergency numbers (which a parent has provided) for pick up of the student.
Parents and guardians, with these procedures in mind, please call the school office to update your phone numbers and emergency contacts if needed. Parents are able to check all information using Family Access.
It is also helpful to school staff if parents set up voice mailboxes or clean up voice mailboxes so they are not full. Many times, we are unable to leave a message in important situations.

Too sick for school?
We are still seeing an increase in student absences due to illness. Please assist us at home in these ways:
- Practice hand washing with your child using soap and water. Hand sanitizer may be effective, but is not a substitute for hand washing.
- Remind your child to cover his/her coughs and sneezes and keep hands away from faces.
- Observe your child for signs of illness before sending him/her to school.
- Keep your child home if he/she has a fever of 100 degrees or higher, has other symptoms of illness, or is just not acting typically. If in doubt about whether your child is ill, please keep him/her home to observe.
- Remember that anyone sick with a temperature of 100 degrees or more, vomiting, or diarrhea must be symptom free for 24 hours (without the use of medications)
- Plan for alternate childcare in case your child becomes sick and you are unable to leave work.
We understand that additional time at home may be a hardship for families but it is necessary to help keep our school healthy. Please call the Health Room at (360) 804-3432 if you have any questions. Thank you for helping us keep our kids and our school healthy!
Student Transfers for 2019-20 School Year
Is your student attending Fryelands Elementary on a transfer? Families living outside of the Monroe School District requesting a Choice Transfer or families living within the Monroe School District requesting an Intra District transfer must complete forms to renew their transfers. All transfer forms must be completed and returned each year.
A separate form is required for each child requesting a transfer. Forms are available online at https://www.monroe.wednet.edu/about/register-for-school/transfer-requests or at the District Administration Building, 200 E. Fremont Street. Please contact the school office for general questions. If you have any specific questions, please call the District Office at (360) 804-2572.

Visitors at school
Unless you have an appointment with a teacher, parents and guests are discouraged from visiting classrooms to drop off lunch or other items for a student. Those items can be left in the office.
Parents are welcome to eat lunch with a student.
Attendance
School attendance is a priority at Fryelands Elementary. Keeping students in school and safe every day takes the cooperation of parents and the school. IF YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD WILL HAVE TO MISS SCHOOL FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE SEND A NOTE OR CALL THE 24-hour ATTENDANCE LINE AT 360-804-3401. If parents do not contact the school by phone or note, the student is considered unexcused. (The office will attempt to contact the parent/guardian of any child who is marked absent without notification to the office.) Unexcused absences will be monitored and the school will follow district policy and state law.
TARDINESS
Tardiness interferes with individual progress and classroom procedures. Students who arrive at school after 8:55 are to report to the office to receive an admit slip. Parents will be contacted if chronic tardiness begins to disrupt the educational program. If a student shows a pattern of poor attendance through excessive tardiness, our guidance counselor will call to set up an appointment to offer any services that the school may be able to provide. You may request, in writing, a copy of your child’s attendance for review at any time.
